Hello everyone,
I'm a bit new to gaming in the Linux world and am having problems with Steam crashing on launch. I have been trying to find a way to troubleshoot this by myself but have been unsuccessful.

POL comes up with a message saying that it is an error in POL_wine and the debug spits out everything below. Any helpful tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated. I am using a bit of an older computer, AMD core with Nvidia video cards, Linux Mint 17 with KDE, Play On Linux 4.2.2.

This probably isn't terribly helpful, but I'm having the same issue. I am also on Linux Mint 17, but Cinnamon. I've been trying to get it to work for the past couple of weeks with no success whatsoever. (https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-13182.html)

I've tried several different Nvidia drivers, including the one's bundled with mint, from Nvidia's site, and from xorg-edge.

I've tried completely removing POL, installing fresh from the .deb on their site, and from Mint's package manager.

I completely removed and re-added wine.

I tried a half dozen different versions of wine in POL.

The only thing I haven't done yet is completely wipe Mint and start from scratch, which I'm just about there. If anyone else has anything that can help, it would be appreciated.

First, start by downloading the newest version of PlayOnLinux:  4.2.8
Did you disable the In-Game Community Overlay?
Also, Borderlands has a launcher that requires dotnet40 package. Try installing that or just disable it by adding argument:  -NoLauncher

I tested Borderlands a few years ago and it ran perfectly...

Note:  Wine 1.7.40 and newer supports the In-Game Overlay

I updated to 4.2.8 and Steam still crashes after it updates. All it says is "Error in main, Steam crashed."
Is there a way to disable in game overlay without launching steam?
The strange thing was is I did a reinstall of PoL before I updated it, and Steam worked fine for a bit, I started downloading Borderlands and it got to about 80% then crashed and haven't been able to get it to relaunch since. Going to try to reinstal Steam now that I've updated PoL.

That is strange it worked for a while and then crashed
Recently I've been getting "steamwebhelper" errors but it doesn't crash Steam.  Just pops up with an error and I click "OK"

Have you installed the 32-bit libraries for Mint?
Use the Synaptics Package Manager and search for ia32-libs or multiarch

I have a feeling you have them installed because normally PlayOnLinux will complain if you don't

It's good to always check the wiki. We try to add to it all of the time. I plan on putting quite a few hours in to it in the next week or two to make it even more robust. :D

I have managed to fix Steam not starting and am now faced with making Borderlands work. I noticed I had run out of room on my "/" partition and ended up doing a fresh install of the OS after resising partitions. Steam starts up and loads fine, but now Borderlands crashes and the debugger shows:

[06/25/15 23:18:15] - Running wine-1.3.26 Steam.exe steam://rungameid/8980 (Working directory : /home/kevin/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Borderlands/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam)

[0625/231818:ERROR:dns_config_service_win.cc(564)] DNS registry watch failed to start.

The almighty Google has thrown a bunch of different results and I'm a bit stummped again. I believe I am using the right video drivers, but I will continue to experiment with it for a bit.

Is there some trick on getting Steam games in general working? Should I have installed the game using the POL installer or steam installer?
https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-10208-Playonlinux_and_Steam_Games.html
Had a derp there...

Having fixed that, the game is still not launching, though I have found this page here which makes refrence to needing vcrun2008, vcrun2005, and d3dx components installed. I was checking the configuration and was missing vcrun2008, but trying to install through the configuration window the installation hangs. Is there a workaround for installing components in POL?

Use the Borderlands Steam installer. That is what it is there for. Don't do a manual install. Click "INSTALL" in POL, search for Borderlands, run the installer, and when asked if you want to install it via Steam, do that. It will do everything for you. Also, you really should go through Wiki, as that stuff is covered in there at great length.

There is no workaround for installing components because the install components tab works. If it isn't working for you, then there is something else going on with your system.

The reason I ask, is because during the install for Borderlands wine comes up with an error "Wine program crash - Internal Errors - Invalid parameters received", but the install completes. Or is this a normal thing? I have given the wiki a go over, and I do believe I am following the instructions properly at this point.

It appears that part of my problem had to do with this : https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-13151.html

But now the game launches for a breif moment, wine shows an error and debugger spits out:

[06/28/15 04:08:56] - Running wine-1.3.26 Steam.exe steam://rungameid/8980 (Working directory : /home/kevin/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Borderlands/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam)

I've been getting a lot of crashes with Windows Steam.  I have noticed almost every single one of them have "steamwebhelper.exe" in the error.

I have Steam working now, I don't believe our problems were related though.

I do notice that the POL page for Borderlands there's an update that's being tested. What sort of risks would I be taking if I gave it a try?
