Seems like this problem has crept back out again. I was playing fine since about the time Blizzard's patch came out on the 22nd/23rd (would maybe freeze 5% of the time at login).

Now the game freezes 100% of the time, but not necessarily at login. Typically within 3 minutes however, whether I am navigating menus or in the game.

I am having the same issue.  I cannot login most of the time as it freezes on "retrieving hero list".  On the times I am able to get in it will freeze me out at some point (whether that be in the AH or in a game.)

Same exact issue here. I can sometimes (maybe 20% of the time) get into a game, but it will lock up within 60 seconds. The kernel is still alive, as I can ssh into it just fine, but it does have one of my processors pegged at 100%, and the X server is throwing lots of stack traces about the event queue overflowing.

I also have the same issue. For me it locks up 100% of the time.
Here are my experiences:

Installed Diablo 3 from scratch
Ran the hack to allow me to log in
Logged into an EU server and it worked fine
Switched to the US server & Diablo downloaded a new patch
Tried logging in again and the whole system crashed right on retrieving heroes list

I'm using Lubuntu 12.04 64 bit, it's a fresh install on the second hard drive on my laptop. The first hard drive has Windows 7 home premium 64 bit and also has Diablo 3 installed. If I reboot and log into Windows 7, Diablo 3 runs fine. It just doesn't proceed past the "Retrieving hero list" step at the login process.

I found the solution that worked for me on here

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5592457019?page=3

Specifically:

setarch i386 -3 playonlinux

Pretty sure that will solve all of our problems related to this.

I have installed playonlinux in Ubuntu 12.04 x64, from software center and installed Diablo3. How can I update the Wine version that Diablo3 is using in playonlinux?

It's not compiled yet. Wait about 30 minutes.

Also, update POL
Bejje Jeudi 7 Juin 2012 à 13:55

Will it update automatically in the program or via Ubuntu's internal update manager?

I'm still having freezing issues with the latest version of wine. With the newest version the game will freeze immediately after log in.

Using the 'setarch i386 -3 playonlinux' command I can get past the log in screen, but the game will freeze after a few minutes (it varies).

I am also using ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. Let me know if I I can post any logs to help.

I've had the same problems. I even got to the point where I reinstalled my OS and recompiled Wine. But, here's what I found and posted over at WineHQ:

I've experimented with Ubuntu instance from 10.x to 12.x, and now
I'm on 11.10 (all 64-bit). I've followed comments on this forum, PoL
forum, and the bnet forums, and finally got to the point where I had D3
installed and past the authentication issue (with a token), and it would
crash randomly before, during, or 30 min after authentication (while
playing). Some seem to think it's a Warden issue, but my experience with
compiling Wine, using PoL, and reverting to Win7, it seems like my
problems stemmed from an old driver issue in Ubuntu 11.10. I uninstalled
the system proprietary ATI drivers, downloaded the latest Catalyst
(12.4) drivers from the ATI website, built them, and installed them.....
so far so good. No random crashes or force reboots...

Root issue: I think it's related to old drivers overheating the
video card. I don't have any details to go on other than some obscure
post somewhere else having a similar problem prompting me to install the
ATI proprietary drivers.

I played for 5 hours after doing this last night.

Tools > Manage Wine versions.
Don't forget to close/reopen the Configure panel so the list of installed Wine versions is updated.

Or upgrade PlayOnLinux to 4.1.1 and you'll get a "+" next to the versions combo list, and a versions list that gets updated automatically.

I'm running the following:
Linux Mint 13 (Ubuntu 12.04)
AMD Radeon 6870
8GB RAM

I'm running the newest version of PlayOnLinux/Wine and the newest Catalyst drivers from AMD (12.4). When I start Diablo III, I see this on my screen: http://goo.gl/yBrzJ

I have 1.5.5-DiabloIII_v3 set to my virtual drive.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

I had the exact same issue in both mint 13 and Ubuntu 12.04 and it's related to fullscreen mode. If i edit a config file in /home/diablo3 i can change it to windowed mode and then the flickering is gone. I also have ATI, but 5770 using the hardware drivers provided for download in Mint and Ubuntu.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give that a shot later today and report my results.

Edit: Fullscreen Windowed mode resolves the horrible issues. Now one to getting the FPS to where the game is playable...

Hi,

1 year late, but only now i try to run diablo 3 with playonlinux and hd 4870.
My game freeze like description of other members. The message of o.O makes sense for me and i tried to monitoring the temperature with the command:
aticonfig --od-gettemperature

The temperature stay in 60 C in idle. I changed the termic past of gpu and and the temperature decreases to 57C. And when i try to play i turn on the fan speed of video card to max speed:
aticonfig --pplib-cmd "set fanspeed 0 100"

With this my game don't freeze at first minutes.
I hope this help others members with this issue.
