MS Office 2007 Installation: Associations and Menu entries?

Are my expectations realistic?

Hello,

I'm trying out playonlinux, and I've tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise from scratch, then install playonlinux and then tried installing MS Office 2007. I tried this exercise twice: Once for Ubuntu 12.04 and once for Xubuntu 12.04 (my target platform). After installation, I have a MS Word that seems to work fine, but no file associations are set up and there are no entries in my dash (Ubuntu/Unity) or menus (Xubuntu/XFCE).

I see that for playonmac, they don't get created automatically. But am unclear about what the intent is for playonlinux.
  • Is installation of MS Office supposed to create these? There are various posts about fiddling with integration of associations and menu entries, but before I go down that path, I'd like to inquire about whether they are supposed to be created automatically.
  • Why are there shortcuts on the desktop instead? Zero linux programs do that...
  • Are there similar desktop-integration issues? E.g. FF,thunderbird integration?
  • Is this a general approach taken by playonlinux, that there are no file associations and menu integration? I never play games, but would like to use playonlinux. For me, associations and menu integration are an essential part of installation.
  • In order to help myself, how do I find/get access to the exact script used when I install an app from the GUI? vim is usually my friend...
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Peter

Good news, this feature is planned for the next version (At least, it should help)

Googling the same topic 3 years later I found this old thread started by me! smiley

Yes, Peter, there is a solution now! Once Office2007 has been installed, it will place Icons for Word, Excel and Powerpoint on the desktop. These are *.desktop files. They also need to be in folders that nautilus recognizes as associations:

cp ~/Desktop/Microsoft\ *.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/

Now I can right-click on a file, select Properties, "Open With" tab, click on "Microsoft Word 2007" and then the "Set as default" button. From now on, opening such a file opens it in word. Bingo!

Running on Ubuntu 14.04

test@ubuntu:~> dpkg-query -W | egrep 'playonlinux|wine'
