Hi,

I am unable to run PlayOnMac 4.013 or 4.014 for the first time on an iMac 27" and on a MacBook, both with Snow Leopard. No problem with a Mac Mini, it installed perfectly.

I get many error codes in the console, some related to python. All I get is a first box with "Unexpected error", or something like that, and two options, Check Console or Terminate. After that, the console keeps running strange things, which slows down the computer.

The three computers also run Parallels with Windows XP (is that a factor?), but, again, I have no problem with PlayOnMac on the Mac Mini. Also, the three computers are up-to-date (SL 10.6.8 and latest Java version).

Any help would be appreciated.

OK, here go the two strings of console output that I got after two failed installation attempts, 20 minutes apart. The message I get is, I believe, "Program encountered fatal error". The first attempt ended with a loop from my antivirus. I also tried to install PlayOnMac after deactivating the antivirus, but it didn't work. Thank you.

Comment? Quel nom? I have no idea about how the innards of PlayOnMac work.

Oh, one thing: The Mac Mini, where PlayOnMac works, only has one user account. Both the iMac and the MacBook, where it doesn't work, have TWO accounts. May that be a factor?

Yes, the two user is definitely a problem, it has already been reported on french forum.
You might try to download PlayOnMac beta on http://beta.playonmac.com

I tried deleting one of the users, and reinstalling POM. Same problem(s). I tried the latest Beta version as well. Same. Any help, anyone?

I have no idea about compiling/decompiling, but I think the error that originates all the rest is this: an UnicodeDecodeError:

Should be easy to fix, shouldn't it? The strange thing is, why did PlayOnMac install normally on my Mac Mini? Is there any setting I could change in my iMac to make python (apparently) handle all that code the same way it did in my Mac Mini?

Thank you for your suggestion, but it doesn't work.

Perhaps I haven't made myself clear, or you haven't understood it from my previous messages: the PlayOnMac app is UNABLE to run FOR THE FIRST TIME, that is, it cannot finish creating the PlayOnMac folders under Library because it appears it encounters a UnicodeDecodeError, and it terminates. Therefore, this is what happens:

1) I run PlayOnMac.app => 2) It starts creating folders under Library => 3) It terminates => 4) I rename the already created Library/PlayOnMac folder => 5) I run PlayOnMac.app again => 6) It starts over, terminates, etc.

I would appreciate if somebody would focus on how to fix the UnicodeDecodeError I described earlier, and on explaining why my Mac Mini doesn't run into that error (or, at least, it doesn't make it terminate POM).

One more note: Not only that, but after POM terminates, sometimes the console shows that something is still running, indefinitely:

What is the language of your system?

Btw, I'm focusing on your problem (I'm not answering your randomly). It's not the first time I see an unicode problem, so I have some idea

Merci beaucoup, problem solved, je croix/espère (pardon mon français). I also started to think the problem had to do with language definition. I'll explain: My language definition is Portuguese in my Macs (Mac Mini, iMac, MacBook): keyboard, time, etc. The difference was, perhaps, that Country, under Formats (third tab), was not defined (ticked) in the iMac. Also, in Input (fourth tab), I ticked "Allow different inputs in each document", I don't know if that helps.

Finally, I deleted the DoubleCommand Preference Pane which I had installed in the iMac and showed as a startup application, though I was not using it. I don't know if that had anything to do with the solution.

PlayOnMac installed and now runs fine.

The last thing to check is to install POM on my MacBook. Si vous voulez, je essaiyerai de faire la même chose (configuration de la langue) et d'en repporter ici, pour identifier le problème pour des autres utilissateurs. Please don't mark this thread as solved yet.
