I'm having the exact same problem, doesn't seem like anybody wants to help out either.

I was having the same problem. Check the file named "variables" that is located in /usr/share/playonlinux/lib/, or /path/to/playonlinux/lib/. You will need to do this as root/sudo. Command:
sudo gedit /usr/share/playonlinux/lib/variables
su -c "gedit /usr/share/playonlinux/lib/variables"

The defaults are:
export SITE="http://repository.playonlinux.com/"
export SITE2="http://files.playonlinux.com/"

change those 2 lines to:
export SITE="http://repository.playonlinux.com"
export SITE2="http://files.playonlinux.com"

The extra trailing slashes freak out the programs/commands that use those variables. Note: POL will now take a while to come up because its checking for updates. Let me know if this fixed the issue for you.

Distro: Fedora 13
Wine: 1.3.6
POL: 3.8.5

You can ignore this warning, it append because POL's website take a little too long to respond but POL will work as expected, don't worry.

Ah, I see now. I was distracted by the updater command line 'playonlinux-cmd --update'. As you see, I don't understand everything. J'aime excuse :( May I ask: Would it be better for us on slow connections to change line 401 of POL~/lib/main to something larger for a timeout?

I am on (painfully slow, will never buy again) satellite internet. It takes my packet 2 seconds just to get to your server, never mind how long your server takes to fire off the PHP script. :D

Your script makes wget timeout after one second. Once i changed it to 10 sec POL came up much faster and happy to see its internet connection.

None of the above worked for me. Please tell me how can I solve the mentioned problem, or a way which I can do what play on Linux does manually in terminal (Creating new wine perfix and install applications via winetricks there). So that I can forget this application until this bug is solved.

Same problem when i installed POL in Ubuntu Software Center.

Solving by downloading directly from the package on the site : http://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html
It seems to redirect you to the same thing. But it worked for me. Twice.

Bye
