Quake 3 cursor problem

Greetings :)

As its my first post, I'd like to say many thanks for making this program. It makes me happy that I'll be able to ditch XP one day :)

Anyhow, here's my config

1.5ghz P4 Willamette (OCed to 1.71ghz)
1gb PC133
80gb hd
ATI Radeon 9600 pro 128mb
Linux Mint 9 LXDE
Playonlinux 3.8.3
Open source X drivers (no proprietary ATI drivers)

Quake 3 installed ok, which is cool. And game runs ok, but the cursor is erratic. It stays within a predefinied box, so I cant turn more than 90 degrees.

BTW - I know there's a linux installer for Q3, and I have another partition running it quite successfully, but after failing to get any of my other games to run with Playonlinux I just wanted to get the most essential game working ;) Also figured it may help other gamers who go to wine first, and are unaware of the linux installer.

I'd like to provide more information, but I'm not sure how to get a log message from the program.

Anyhow, all help greatly appreciated

First, install AIT/AMD driver, Opensources one are NOT for DirectRendering (3D), it may work not too bad with Q3 (old 3D engine) but it will definitly not work properly with younger games.

Second, use Advanced Wine Configuration POL plugin to set MouseWarpOverride to Force and see if it solve the cursor problem.

Third, it will, by the way, definitly better to use native binaries when you can, such as for Q3 game. Using wine to play Q3 under linux is like using WIndows XP in Virtual Desktop to play Q3 under windows 7...a waste of ressources.

Many thanks :) That sorted out the mouse problem nicely.

I don't think ATI drivers are an option. From what I've been lead to believe, ATI drivers do not support Radeon 9600 any more, and its not possible to roll back because of the version of X which is now in use. Still, I'll run envy and see what drivers it suggests. I really have to sort something out, because even Quake 3 is running jerkily with wine. If I can't get Q3 to run smoothly, I have no hope of running UT2003 or Republic Commando (which are necessities IMO)

Oh well, if I can get games running smoothly I'll try creating some scripts :)

Oh, and I'm aware that there's a linux binary for UT2003. However getting it to run seems to be a problem atm.

You right, i didn't pay attention, "old" radeon models are not supported anymore...

I think the "jerk" problem is because you're wasting ressources with wine threads, maybe you could at least try q3 linux binary and see if it run smoother, if it is, then you're fixed :)

UT2k3 use many more ressources than q3, don't expect a good result with wine if q3 is already jerky...
