Hello all, I've got Homeworld2 installed through playonlinux, but the game sounds terrible and the video is really bad. Sometimes the game crashes me completely out of my session in GNOME. I know I can run the game on this laptop because I've done so with Vista installed.

Running Linux Mint Felicia
Toshiba A205-s5825 laptop with intel x3100 videocard and intel 1.73ghz dual core; originally loaded with Vista
Wine version 1.1.9
Running GNOME, but is problematic in KDE in similar ways

I'm no good with a terminal, so if there are error messages then I'm not seeing them. Playonlinux doesn't report any problems tho.

You should read this about latest Wine and your card (change ATI word to Intel).
Then you can do what is described in second post here

Ok:

This is not visible when I go to edit the registry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Wine\\Direct3D]

The \\Direct3D is the only part that's missing. I downloaded the .pol file and installed it, just like you said.

What's next?

1) You should create it (in registry choose new->key ) or use official plugin to do it for you which is here

2) Did you set your Homeworld to this Wine version?

3) You installed it by "Install a .pol package or an unsupported application" right?

4) In AppDB entry for Homeworld 2 one of test reports says that the performance of homeworld 2 is poor so maybe you cannot do anything about it but someone wrote also about -nopbuffer command line option but you should try this at the end when there is nothing else to make the game to work better

you can set this with help of unofficial POL Helper plugin which is at the end of this forum site
To set -nopbuffer command line option using POL Helper:
a)run POL Helper through plugins POL Helper
b) choose "Create/Edit POL Launcher"
c) choose your homeworld 2 as "Chosen POL Launcher"
d) add in "Command line (optional)" entry
"-nopbuffer" without quotes

So sorry to get back to you after such a long time.

I got HW2 working with -nopbuffer; graphics are great and so is the sound, game no longer crashes.

There is one more issue: the cursor from the GNOME & KDE desktops does not go away during game play, even though I use the in-game cursor with no problems. Any suggestions to make it go away?

It's good that you came back, because someone could have got the same problem and when he reads that it worked for you then he may be motivated to do as described above.

Did you disabled Compiz / Compiz-Fusion / Kwin and unchecked "Emulate a virtual desktop" under "Configure Wine" for Homeworld in PlayOnLinux
