Hello,

I just switched to linux OS(Ubuntu8.10) and probably did something wrong when trying to install playonlinux typing commands using terminal :-°. Now not only, I did not succeed to install playonlinux but also I put the mess I guess because synaptic returns following error:

E: Type ‘--2009-04-19’ is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialogue to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

What have I done? Any ideas? Could you help to fix it? Many thanks in advance...

Best Damien.

Problem is:
You've probably typed commands for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) and not for Ubuntu 8.10 (Interpid Ibex)

To install PlayOnLinux:
Simply download this deb file. Double click on it and install.

To solve your problems with synaptic
You have to uncheck PlayOnLinux repository or delete "playonlinux.list" file which is in "/etc/apt/sources.list.d/" directory or both

Thanks for answering.

When typing command failed I did try to follow the link and install the package but Gdebi Package installer is also bugging and return following message:

This is a major failure of your software management system. Please check for broken packages with synaptic, check the file permissions and correctness of the file '/etc/apt/sources.list' and reload the software information with: 'sudo apt-get update' and 'sudo apt-get install -f'.

That's why I tryed to open synaptic that failed as well :-(

How can I check /etc/apt/sources.list?

I haven't got Ubuntu but to check sources.list you have to go to "/etc/apt/" directory and open "sources.list" as root (one of the possible commands is 'sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list' ) with text editor and one of the lines there will be "deb http://deb.mulx.net/ hardy main" or something with playonlinux inside which can safely removed.

Hi,

can you post content of this file : /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list ?
It's seem that you have an error on the first line of this file.
