Nothing works properly

I have been messing around with PoL and wine for the past couple of days, and am back where I started. I am using an acer aspire laptop with gentoo 2.6.27-r8 and KDE 3.5 installed.

I followed the guide over at http://www.playonmac.com/en/download-gentoo.html. I've repeated the installation several times with variations and had very little success.

When I emerge playonlinux, it will only emerge version 3.3.1 with wine version 1.1.12. It seems to work, but when I go to install Steam (which is really the only thing I'm interested at this point) the loader gets stuck on "Please wait while the wine prefix is created..." If I'm running it from console, it goes on to tell me how wineprefixcreate is deprecated. I figured this might be patched in the newer version, so I dowloaded the 3.4 tarball from this site and ran the python script. Now, steam installs, but doesn't run.

I have re-installed several times with different versions of wine and even accidentally deleted playonlinux from my portage tree, having to download the 3.3.1 ebuild manually (irrelevant, but annoying :P).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
zpr
