AoE2 : problem with playing with friends

The friends option on steam does not work, so I can't play with invite nor join games with friends in AoE2. I have chosen Win XP for wine. Also, I should add -no-cef-sandbox as launch argument - how do I do that?

Is multiplayer really still supported by this very old game ?

Add to what ? POL ? Wine ? game ?
