POL appears to be completely broken in Ubuntu 18.04.

When creating a new virtual drive with any wine version other than default, POL got stuck in creating virtual drive with these errors even though all freetype packages are installed (including i386 ones)

So POL is completely useless in 18.04. In 16.04 it works with no issue on same machine.

I too, am having this problem, although I am using LinuxMiny 19 with the Cinnamon deskop, the underlying Linux distro is Ubuntu 18.04.  Here is the log produced by POL:

multiple users are reporting this issue on Ubuntu and playonlinux:

the issue appears only if you try to use the provided scripts. using the option to install "manualy" i.e. "install a non-listed program" removes this issue and install progresses normally. however this defeats the purpose of playonlinux since this would be almost the same as doing it all manually using wine in CLI.

 

there is an ugly workarround available online for the freetype font install issue. however even if you resolve that playonlinux would be stuck at creating virtual drive and the instalation never proceeds (if one chose to use the install script).

this issue also prevents the user from easilly using multiple version of wine. which is another reason i used to advice newbies to use PoL

 

it would be good if someone could have a look at it and at least let us know if for example the issue was resolved in any newer playonlinux versions. it used to work so perfectly in the old Ubuntu.

do you need people to help you debug the issue (ie. to figure out where is freezes) or to do scripts? because it looks like every script install is affected. would that mean a mass change would be possible if the issue was located?

 

I don't know how to write scripts but if you need people to pinpoint the issue perhaps we could recruit some over at Ubuntu forums to help. there are quite a few Ubuntu users using PoL especially since it was often offered to newbies that wan't to "play (some games) on Linux".

What needs to be done is fairly simple: just change the wine version and test that it works properly

This is still an ongoing issue. As some programs won't work with newer Wine versions (which is why we use POL!), can we get the older Wine versions that are provided with POL to work properly? Maybe an updated libz.so*?
