Hi PlayOnLinux community,

Recently, I have installed the Goldeneye Source Mod on Steam (Wine 3.11 recent version) on Linux Mint 18.3. POL version 4.2.12

Note: I'm still new in Mint

I used this guide by booman: http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/goldeneye-source-guide.2149/

Whenever I start Goldeneye Source, I meet with a "Sound not avaliable" notification in the Wine environment. Here is a link to see this: https://imgur.com/a/zo5tdav   (includes system info)

When I press "cancel", Sound works but on only one audio channel (several audio clips cannot play at one time, and sometimes no sound plays) I have tried changing Windows versions, installing audiox, and installing other Wine versions, but none worked.

I guess this is a Wine error, since I checked if any apps are using sound devices and there were none. I used pulseaudio in the host system and even gnome-alsa, but both had the same error.

Outside of GE:S or Steam games, the sound works properly. In fact, before I reinstalled Linux Mint the sound played properly in every application.

In the case i need to elaborate, I will be happy to do so.

EDIT: Here is what causes the error window:

0042:fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unknown action: 116

Well, I guess I found a strange temporary workaround

This involves having pulseaudio's volume control running with the command "pavucontrol"

When it's running, there are no issues with the sound in Wine, everything is perfect. Yet when I close pavucontrol before I launch POL, the same error repeats again.

I will try to find a permanent solution, feel free to throw some suggestions.

Strang, I have played Goldeneye Source in PlayOnLinux many times, I rarely had an issue with sound.

Have you tried a "staging" version of Wine?

What packages/overrides did you install?

Make sure Mint is fully up to date.  Sometimes a Pulseaudio update can fix problems like this.

Also, feel free to try older versions of Wine, but be careful, some of them do not work in Steam.

To bad it doesn't have a stand-alone installer with Source SDK 7.

Sorry for the late reply,

I have downloaded Linux Mint 19 to see if the problem would be solved, I will report back with more info after running tests. I am guessing this problem relates to the kernel version. I will try staging as well as older versions of wine to experiment. I will check the packages installed.

Awesome!  I haven't actually given Mint 19 a try yet.

Alright, so here is what I got.

I reinstalled everything first (POL, WIne Libs, Programs, and Wine downloads)

After using Wine verision 3.9 and carefully following installation steps, the problem is solved and I was able to restore normal audio function with not just GE:S but other Source and Steam games as well.

The source eventually narrowed down to:

  • Missing audio libs (had to install xaudio and daudio)
  • Incorrect Installation procedures
  • Installing with the Windows 7 OS Version instead of XP
  • Strangely enough, the problems associated with Pulseaudio were solved without an update, which definitely points the blame toward the libs

Overall, I was able to restore the same function I had before.

On another note, I recommend Linux Mint 19, as it fixed most High-DPI issues I have (3200x1900), the UI is updated, and faster than before. Was worth it to update.
