I was advised to install playonlinux with the following sugestions:

sudo apt-get install playonlinux
create virtual drive
select latest wine version in playonlinux wine version manager
browse and select .exe to install windows program or game

I am running Linux Mint 18.0. I want to run forscan for windows.

sudo apt-get install playonlinux - it is now installed.

select latest wine version in playonlinux wine version manager

I previously installed wine, but playonlinux does not see it - should I uninstall wine, and then install it from the  version manager?

the installed version of wine is the "system" version. POL come with almost all other wine version (because some program work better with an older version). You can install a wine version using the wine manager (see POL menu) or by clickling the button next the wine version selector ;)
