Hello,

I have managed to get steam to work using the 2.12 staging build from here: 

https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/macosx/download.html

After installing it, i opened wine staging (in applications) and it brought up a terminal window

i typed in: wine start

which brought up a new 'windows' terminal (I guess?) - its black

I simply navigated to where steam.exe was located c:/windows/Program Files/Steam/steam.exe

In my case I was doing a fresh install - it downloaded the 138mb update, then a 44mb update. i could then log in and i am currently downloading company of heroes. 

i followed this part of the guide: https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_Guide#How_to_install_and_run_Windows_programs

Nothing comes up in the store, and i am unsure of the fix for that, but in my case i could use my library and download.

This is as far as I have gotten though...

I followed the 2.12 staging instructions and managed to launch Steam. I couldn't, however, launch any games from it. I closed down Steam, but when I tried to open it again, it just launched Wine with a terminal window which couldn't understand "wine start" (command not found).

Can someone explain how to do this as if I'm 12? I can't figure it out at all, my wine version is stuck on 1.7 even after running the 2.12 (staging) installation. Any help is appreciated. 

Okay - after a lot of trial and error, here's what I've got. I'm using PlayOnMac to play AoE II HD so my steps are specific to it. I'm also using a MBP with Sierra 10.12.5

1- Uninstall Steam and AoE - whatever you have installed.

2- Download Wine Staging version 2.12 here - https://wiki.winehq.org/MacOS

3- Install wine and confirm you're running version 2.12 by opening wine staging (either via Launchpad or Applications folder) and enter command 

wine --version

If the version is anything other than 2.12, uninstall and start over. If it is 2.12, proceed.

4- Return to PlayOnMac and click on Tools > Manage Wine versions. Use the arrows to move 2.12 from the left column to the right. Click through the install wizard. 

5- Reinstall Steam - it still won't open, but that's okay.

6- Locate the SteamSetup.exe file in the PlayOnMac Virtual Drives > Steam folder. Right click this EXE file and open it with wine staging. Steam setup should open prompting for your login info. 

7- Once the updates are done, you should be looking at your Steam account. Download AoE as usual. The game won't run when it's downloaded, so one more change to make.

8- Right click on AoE in your Steam account and click on Properties. Click on Set Launch Options and type

-NoStartUp

Then click OK.

9- Next, click on Local Files at the top. Click on Browse Local Files... "under the local files tab and change 'Launcher.exe' to 'LauncherBak' and change 'AOE II.exe' (or something similar) to 'Launcher.exe'. you are basically just changing the executable file steam needs to run to start the game. This should fix all launch problems."

Thank you for your help and detailed insturctions.  I was able to succesffully launch Steam and AOE.  The only problem I am having now is the font looks a little different, not a big deal, but I can't join any multi-player games anymore.  It just says " Joining multiplayer game... Press ESC if you don't join the game in 15 seconds."  

 

Any possible thoughts on how to solve that?

rangerrob. playonmac is kind of a graphical interface for wine. You can run exe with wine alone though playonmac make it easier to manage.

If you want to try running using wine alone, simply navigate to the directory of steam.exe. If you cant find this, right click the steam shortcut on playonmac and choose "open application directory". Once you are in the directory, right click and open terminal from that directory (not sure if your os does this). Enter in the terminal

wine steam.exe

Again i'm using linux so there might be some differences. But the idea is simply enter enter wine xxx.exe in terminal

Aside from the small font issue (which I can deal with), this has worked for me. Bridget, I think I love you.

I'm quite sad, my steam still isn't working anymore like it used to. There also, seems to still be no update for the steam libraries

I had this issue and the only solution I could find was signing up for a free trial of some crossover software to get it running. And even then I had to change the names of the launch files. Hopefully there's a POM update in the works and it will show up before the trial ends. -.-'
