If you are using Ubuntu 16.04 by default you will have Unity desktop, to improve the performance you can have the MATE desktop enviorment as well, this can be selected at the login window, its a matter of clicking the icon to the right of the user name and selecting between Ubuntu (default) and MATE. The MATE desktop is GNOME 2 and the installation will not affect your Unity desktop but just an alternative which you can switch between with all the same applicaions you already currently installed as well as new ones.
To install open a terminal Ctrl+Alt+t, at the command prompt type "sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-extras" without quotation marks. After the installation completes reboot and select MATE desktop as described above. You should see all your Icons that you have on your Unity desktop and the menus will have all the programs listed. Under System-Preferences-Look and Feel-Apperance, I selected Ambient MATE as my Theme, I think it looks the best. If you don't see Ambient theme you can install the theme from the synaptic package manager mate-themes. If you do not have the synaptic manager install it by using the terminal "sudo apt-get install synaptic". For added performance install the "ubuntu restriced extras" "ubuntu restricted addons" as well from the synaptic pacage manager.
Since MATE uses less resources your WINE/POL will run better with WOT. Enjoy
