How to type in other languages?

So, I'm new to this whole WINE thing, but something seems to be weird.

I'm trying to get the ability to type in other languages in WINE (yes I am using PlayOnLinux). I can't seem to get it working though.

Specifically, I want Esperanto and Japanese to work. But my problem is that I can't seem to get it to type any of the Esperanto characters (I can press the key combinations for ĉĝĥĵŝŭ but nothing happens), nor can I seem to get it to type in Japanese (it just won't let me switch keyboard layouts at all). I know I have the fonts for Esperanto installed (it shows the Esperanto characters just fine), but Japanese seems to have issues with the font as well (all I get is blocks).

Any idea how to fix this? I'm on Ubuntu MATE 16.04.
