Can you tell me a bit about your system?

Can you run any other games in PlayOnLinux?

Have you tried "staging" versions of Wine?

I'm assuming you have the proprietary drivers installed for your Intel G33 graphics chip.  Becasue you can play games.  HL/CS are already native to Linux, but are you playing Hitman in PlayOnLinux?

I'm going to see if GTA SA even runs on an Intel G33 graphics chip...
Wow, the requirements are really really low, so that isn't your problem.

Is that debug log before and after the crash?

I would keep using the Wine version that allows the menu to work.  There is a chance that GTA SA might not like dual-core CPU's.

I have a trick, but not sure if this is the problem...
This is a shot-in-the-dark:

Launch Terminal with Ctrl+Alt+Del
Type:

Code:
taskset -c 0 playonlinux

Now you are running PlayOnLinux in single-core mode.  If the game refuses to launch, just close PlayOnLinux and single-core mode is disabled.

As for libraries, sometimes you can find a folder in the game directory that has the required libraries:

  • support
  • redist
  • directx

Something like that.  You may have to poke around a bit.  In the folder will be Direct X files, Visual C+ files, XAct and other files needed for the game.  Take note of them and try to install them in PlayOnLinux one-at-a-time.

I know it sucks, but just might work.  Normall I only install these libraries for most games:

  • corefonts
  • d3dx9
  • tahoma
  • vcrun2008
  • vcrun2010

There is a post on WineHQ's about missing textures in the menu and then crashing upon relaunch:

If you are using Mesa driver for your video card (e.g. intel), you will get no textures in the menu, and trying to start new game will crash the game. This is because the game uses patented texture compression algorithm, which is left out of Mesa for legal reasons. To get GTA SA working, you have to get libtxc_dxtn.so library. Once you install it, GTA will work.
You can read about this library and download source from here:

The site is down but you can search online or your package installer for libtxc_dxtn

Yes try this:

  1. Launch PlayOnLinux
  2. Select GTA SA
  3. Click Configure
  4. Click Wine Tab
  5. Click Wine Configuration
  6. Click the Libraries Tab

Sometimes installing too man libraries can cause problems as well.  Maybe try removing all of the libraries in the Wine Configuration and then start over with Installing Components Tab.  Start with the basics as mentioned above.

There is a chance too many libraries have been installed, but if there is a video card driver issue conflicting with the game, then it doesn't matter.

This is some of the trial-n-error I have to do when testing games.  Some game its one thing that makes it run, other games its multiple-things.  It can be frustrating, but when you get the right configuration its very rewarding.

Have you already tried doing a fresh installation of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas?

I was referring to the screenshots you provided.  Going off memory of course, but it looks like there are a few libraries that might be conflicting with something.  I have seen it happen before, some games need all the direct x libraries, xact, directsound, directmusic, etc.  Others will have problems with those libraries installed.

Sorry man, wish I had a copy to test it myself.  It has to b a problem with Grand Theft Auto San Adreas.  Half-Life, Counterstrike and Playstation Emulators run as native Linux programs.  Anything you run in PlayOnLinux/Wine is Windows only, so many times its a guessing game.

Do you have any other Grand Theft Auto games?  You can try those as well.

I know its frustrating, I've been doing this for 4 years with all of my Windows games.  But 90% of my games are running in PlayOnLinux, so its very rewarding.

Before you spend more hours trial-n-error, you might want to try another computer.  Its worth a try...
