Hello everyone ! I posted something a few weeks ago because I could not get Assassin's Creed II to work, then I discovered that the game was supported on POL... ^^'

So, I tried to install it that way, but I still have problems, mainly with UPlay. From what I understand, it seems to be a fairly common one, but I have no idea how to resolve it. The installation process worked perfectly fine. When it was done, I tried to run the game and it opened up the Uplay window without problems. It asked me to register, then told me that "the account registration service was not available for the moment" so I registered online and tried again.
Now, it still refuses to connect to the internet and tells me that "there seems to be a problem with your internet connection. Please check your settings or switch to offline mode".
Searching the internet for a bit (after trying again a few times for two weeks), I learned that there is an issue with Uplay and proxies, so I clicked on the "change proxy settings" button, except I ended up there => http://postimg.org/image/uku6ebmrv/ which is... not helpful at all.

Does anyone have an idea of what to do ? :/

I orginally had that problem as well.  There used to be a problem with Crypt32 encryption and you couldn't update Uplay without it.  Newer versions of Wine have already fixed this.
I was able to install and play:

  • Assassin's Creed II
  • Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (Steam/Uplay)
  • Assassin's Creed Revelations (Steam/Uplay)

If the PlayOnLinux installer is automatically using an older version of Wine, just download a newer one like:  1.7.55
Go to:

  1. Tools
  2. Wine Manager
  3. Select Wine 1.7.55 on the left
  4. Click the Arrow
  5. Wait while it downloads
  6. Close the Wine Manager

Now go back to PlayOnLinux Configure
Select your Assassin's Creed virtual drive on the left
General Tab
Use the drop-down-arrow to select Wine 1.7.55

Now launch Uplay again and see if it updates

Thank you for your reply !

I did what you said, and the first time Uplay got stuck "looking for patches". Now, it won't even start.

This is what I got from the debugger (first time I launched it) :

[11/20/15 21:16:01] - Running wine-1.7.55 AssassinsCreedIIGame.exe (Working directory : /home/roxane/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/AssassinsCreed2/drive_c/Program Files/Ubisoft/Assassin's Creed II)
wine: configuration in '/home/roxane/.PlayOnLinux//wineprefix/AssassinsCreed2' has been updated.
[1120/211656:ERROR:network_change_notifier_win.cc(153)] WSALookupServiceBegin failed with: 8
[1120/211656:ERROR:dns_config_service_win.cc(583)] DNS registry watch failed to start.

[1120/211713:ERROR:renderer_main.cc(200)] Running without renderer sandbox
[1120/211916:ERROR:ipc_channel_win.cc(435)] pipe error: 233

[1120/211918:ERROR:channel.cc(317)] RawChannel read error (unknown)
[1120/211918:WARNING:pref_notifier_impl.cc(27)] pref observer found at shutdown proxy

Apparently the "renderer sandbox" error is normal and can be ignored ? I don't really know what the others mean.

I tried to come back with the 1.5.3-ubisoft2 version of wine that the POL installer uses. After launching Uplay, it told me that "the program (unidentified) has encountered a serious problem and needs to close" and shut down every time I launched it. Switching to 1.7.55 again, I get the same thing : first time it launches and gets stuck, then it doesn't start anymore.

When I installed/played II, Brotherhood and Revelations Uplay was running fine.  Didn't have any issues.  There is a chance a newer version of Uplay is causing some headaches.

I may have to try installing Uplay again to see if anything has changed.  Crazy timing because I'm helping someone else with the Origin client from EA

Looks like your PlayOnLinux is up-to-date
I've never used PCLinuxOS

Do you have 32-bit libraries installed?
Can you play any other games in PlayOnLinux?
Do you have Nvidia proprietary drivers installed?

You may have to try Ubuntu or Mint to get this running...
I'm using Mint 17.2 64-bit and Nvidia 346 drivers

Unfortunately, it did the same thing as the 1.7.55 version... Well, the results anyway, the debugger is slighty different, with a line about not being able to open slave :

[11/23/15 20:19:02] - Running wine-1.7.55-staging AssassinsCreedIIGame.exe (Working directory : /home/roxane/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/AssassinsCreed2/drive_c/Program Files/Ubisoft/Assassin's Creed II)

Complementary infos about my system :

I can play others games : Darksiders works well on POL (the menus flicker a bit, but nothing truly annoying), I play Assassin's Creed through wine directly and it works well too (even better on PcLinuxOS than it worked on Mint last time I used it).

I've got the proprietary drivers installed for the Nvidia video card, the basics 32-bit libraries are installed (the ia32-libs package) for the distro itself, and the wine32.32bit package is installed also.

Sounds like your system is ready-to-go for gaming.
Are you sure you tried the "staging" version?

I'll install Uplay in a minute and see what it does for me
I wouldn't be surprised if they added a new proxy or encryption to download the updates.
This won't be the last time.  Wine developers usually get it fixed or a patched version of Wine will fix it.

Until you get Uplay running, you won't be able to play Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood or Revelations

The 1.7.55-staging, yes. I just tried again and it's still stuck.

I'll wait to see if it works with you, then.

At least, if we get this one running, there shouldn't be any problems when I try to install the next AC's :p

I got a bit further with Uplay and Wine 1.7.55-staging

Wine Configuration
Leave Windows version as Windows XP

You need these packages when manually installing:

  • corefonts
  • d3dx9
  • tahoma
  • vcrun6

It will hang on "Looking for patches" but will eventually update and then go to the Login Screen
Then it might crash with an error
Close the window and launch again
I was able to login and see my games

I didn't download a game, but if you get this far, try downloading Assassin's Creed II

How long did it take for you before Uplay started updating ? Because it's been "looking for patches" for two hours, now...

booman Mardi 24 Novembre 2015 à 18:02

About 2-5 minutes
Try killing it and luanching it again.
The one package that let me get that far was the vcrun6
I downloaded Assassin's Creed II completely, getting ready to launch it.
I don't think my GeForce 7600 GT will be supported sad

Assassin's Creed II launches and I hear audio, but my video card isn't supported because the screen is black.
I'll have to try it on my GeForce 550 Ti

So, I tried to just add the "vcrun6" package to the POL installation, Uplay still gets stuck (even when I kill it and try again) but I clicked on the desktop icon after I killed Uplay : it ran the "Ubisoft Autopatch", told me it found an update and downloaded it. Then it just sat there, doing nothing... Clicking again does nothing since it says it's up-to-date, and it doesn't help Uplay at all, so I'm not sure what it is.

POL does tell me, when it starts Uplay, that it has encountered an unrecoverable error and must shut down, even if it doesn't actually shut down, but the log is a dmp file and I have no idea how to read it.

Its really being stubborn
You could download Mint 17.2 put it on a flash drive and do a live boot

Then download Uplay, Wine, PlayOnLinux
Go through the steps again
If it works, then it might be something with your distro

Everything works perfectly on Mint... Well, I was due to change distros anyway :p (And it's been years since I've used Mint, I had forgotten how much I like Cinnamon)

So I suppose either it was something with my system that I did not install or that I did wrong, or PCLinuxOS and Uplay don't play nice with each other.

Thank you so much for your help, I was wondering if I was ever going to be able to play :)

No problem.  I'm just happy to get another Linux Gamer!
Please post if you have any more games you want to try

Don't forget to mark this thread as "solved"
