Whenever I open PlayOnLinux, it says a new version is available (4.2.9). I already downloaded 4.2.9 and extracted all the files but I don't seem to be able to install it, or don't know how.

Using Debian Jessie, amd64. As far as I know I'm multiarch enabled for 32-bit, but I don't know know to confirm that.

You should be able to download the PlayOnLinux4.2.9.deb file and double-click to install.

The software installer should automatically launch and ask for a password.
You might get a warning that there is an older version in the package manager or something, just ignore it and continue installing.

That is all I've ever done with Mint and Ubuntu

"extracted all the files" looks very suspicious

I have a feeling he used Archive Manager to open the .deb file instead of installing it.  I've done that before when I didn't know the difference between a tar & deb
