Thank god I'm not the only one with this problem, I thought I'd finally had it with Ubuntu.

... It's a shame "sudo apt-get build-dep wine" won't work anymore ...
If someone uses the howto I mentioned before, you have to manually add some source reps (before the second "sudo apt-get build-dep wine").
Edit /etc/apt/sources.list
at the end add this lines
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main restricted deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise universe deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates universe deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise multiverse deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates multiverse deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-backports main restr deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security main restricted deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security universe deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu precise-security multiverse
Note that I'm using Kubuntu 12.04, change "precise" if needed Edité par Elros

That's the thing, there's no such dependency trees on saucy repos. I have the respective repos active but "sudo apt-get build-dep wine" won't do anything. I've read something about multiarch edits to repos and a confuse rant about why would they do that to the repos. I was confused too, so I tried to satisfy the dependencies the best I could. It compiled and steam started at least hahaha. Edité par urbanshadow

I haven't tried anything to get it working again, but my guess is Wine 1.7.8 will contain the fix. I looked at the News page on Winehq and there aren't that many days separating 1.7.x releases, so even if you can't get it working immediately, an officially available fix shouldn't be too far off.

OK, so Steam doesn't play nicely with Wine. Big deal.
I never wanted Steam anyway and was extremely annoyed when installing Skyrim I got stuck with Steam as well. To my mind Steam adds nothing to Skyrim apart from taking up time loading and I never use it. I have found that Skyrim will work fine in off-line mode. Does anyone know how I can get Skyrim to run off-line permanently?

Yeah, I wasn't happy about Skyrim requiring Steam either. All of the other Elder Scrolls games were retail. I hoping for the same with Skyrim, but nope... they pulled a "Steam DRM" instead. I'm sure its in their best interests because of piracy, but it kinda sucks for us. I'll wait for tomorrow and will download Wine 1.7.8 to test Steam.

There are ways to make it run offline and without steam, but you need a purchased copy of the game. That said, you can actually make work the latest steam version without steam by replacing some files in skyrim dir. I will not discuss further this subject to prevent rule infringement of this forum. If you already got the update on Dec 3rd, can you run Steam offline in PlayOnLinux and still play your games? I'm guessing the answer is "no" because the update already broke Wine/Steam compatibility. Only those of you who have not launched Steam since Dec 3rd can still play games offline. The rest of us are stuck waiting for a fix.

Unfortunately the answer is no. But well, I got skyrim running without steam using arcane methods commented above so no probs. Edité par urbanshadow

Yes, it works perfectly well for me without Steam. Even after the update. At the moment I'm unplugging the RJ45 from my hub and Steam just goes into off-line mode. I then start Skyrim and away it goes. That's why I asked if it is possible to get Skyrim running permanently off-line as fiddling about with ethernet cables is a bit of a pain. Oh and yes I do have a retail DVD, as far as the original installation was concerned it was useless, just a coaster. The only thing of use was the activation code. Still I got it from Tescos for £20, a bit cheaper than from Steam. Edité par nematoad

Oh I got the update alright, a big downloaad like that on my narrow broadband is not something that you would blink and miss. Wine is throwing all the errors that everyone here has mentioned, so I have definitely got the SNAFU as well. I'm currently using 1.72. Like i say I just unplug the RJ45, Steam goes to off-line mode and I can hjust start Skyrim sans the bloat of Steam. Edité par nematoad

Most Steam updates are less than 100 Megabytes, so it shouldn't have been too large. My internet is 6Mbps download, so it doesn't take very long to download the update. But its good to hear Wine 1.7.2 might still work after the update, even if only offline. When you go online it crashes correct?

Ha, you are lucky! My download speed, if you can call it that, is approx 200kBs, so it takes a while.
Yes, PoL throws an error message complaining about a wine error and then drops me back to the desktop.

Isn't the 1.7.8 Wine update supposed to fix this? Also isn't it out today or am I getting my hopes up too much?
