Hi, I'm pretty new to Play on Linux and Linux in general so please have patience!
These VSTs are just .dll files so copying them in to the VST folder in POL virtual drive folder seems to work ok. They show up in Ableton 8 fine and they load ok but when I click and drag a control the GUI for that control turns to a grey block like this: The plugin does actually work, if I use the native Ableotn sliders for the vst it runs perfectly well. I don't see a great deal in the debugger, I guess because the plugin is actually working ok but it's just a gui issue? I do see something that says this but I'm not sure it is related: wine: Call from 0x7bc4d490 to unimplemented function ntdll.dll.EtwEventRegister, aborting I'm hoping there is a dll/windows component I can install to fix it but I have no idea what it would be. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this or is it likely it just doesn't work properly? I'm using xubuntu 13.10 (32 bit) Xfce Wine 1.5.20 Ableton Live 8.2.2 Latest version of the vst plugins from http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/ |

You have to run a few different programs to get this working. Really, they are just bridges.
Its just graphical. Shouldnt really be an issue. First, we need more info than what you have given. FULL debug output would be great. Ableton runs VERY well through wine. Like, no issues. At least not for me, and Im recording some song for an upcoming album through wine (just as proof-of-concept). You should first set that virtual drive to GDI, and not DEFAULT or OpenGL. That takes care of most graphic glitches in ABLETON.... That being said, if you are not having issues with graphic glitches in ableton, then this will not fix that. The glitches you are seeing look like overlay issues. Like, all of the grey spots are where things move, and for movement, there has to be some sort of overlay that is drawing the knobs turning. Did you program these? If you can find out what/how they were written, it may give us some clues as to whey they are glitching in Linux. If you are running ANY graphics effects/eye candy, make sure that is off. The overlays can interfere with eachother when using compositing window managers like Compiz and whatnot. As for your computer specs, post up your FULL computer specs, specifically the output of these commands:
This will give us some insight into your graphics and what can cause issues. Honestly, XFCE has never caused graphic issues like this, so basically, what I am thinking, is that whatever was programmed to draw the knobs and faders, is not being drawn from a lack of dependency, or in rare cases, and obscure engine that just doesnt work. For VSTs, that is rarely the case, but Im just guessing until we get some more info on your setup as requested above. If its directx related, then you may want to try to install d3dx9 in that virtual drive, so that it can draw it as it should be shown. (This is still a guess until we get the info requested): To do this: PlayOnLinux -> Configure -> select the virtual drive where these VSTs are at -> Install Components tab -> double-click d3dx9 -> let install After its done installing (should only take a minute or so), try to re-run Ableton, and see if you can load a VST without issues. The big thing Im wondering about is your graphics setup, in terms of hardware and drivers. Proprietary drivers and opensource drivers shouldnt really affect this, but 13.10 is a beta version of Ubuntu, and I never recommend running ANYTHING BUT LTS VERSIONS LIKE 12.04, unless you have a very specific reason, or you are testing it. LTS versions are stable as a table, and should never be replaced by a NON-LTS Ubuntu. Its ok to experiment, but this version has not even been out a couple of weeks, so its about as beta as ubuntu gets when released to the public, as its an experiment to work out bugs for the next LTS. But yeah. Post up some of the info above, and lets see what we can do. Should be something simple. Im almost positive its the graphics stack, as your version of Ubuntu runs a newer X server, newer kernel, newer DRM/DRI setup, and blah blah blah. lol. I run Arch currently, and running about as bleeding edge as you can get (kernel, xorg, nvidia drivers all beta, all compiled from source), and I dont have any graphic issues, but Im also running KDE. lol. Lets just see what the info you post about it says. :) Please: Post debug logs & full computer specs in first post No private messages for general help, use the forums Read the wiki, Report broken scripts |

Thanks for such a detailed response!
Here is the log, I just had a weird problem with Live crashing on startup but I changed the Wine version to system in the POL preferences and it seems to be working ok now. I did also have some crashes with other VSTs I was trying so a lot of this probably isn't related at all but the last part should be related. over) underrun occurred ALSA lib I am also wondering about my graphics driver too. I am also finding screen tearing when watching videos but I haven't investigated this yet so I don't know if it's just the player I am using or whether there is an actual issue here (and whether it is related to this or not). Honestly, I feel a bit of an idiot for installing 13.10, I just kind of jumped in and didn't really look at the differences between them. I am seriously thinking of wiping everything and starting again with the LTS in 64 bit (I'm running 32 bit) because I noticed on the Ubuntu website that my particular laptop is certified with the LTS in 64 bit so I'm sure everything would be rock solid. I'm experiencing quite a few bugs since 13.10 updated from the previous latest version so I am starting to regret using the latest. I know it's not related to POL but if you have any opinion about this I would love to hear it. Are you able to try the VSTs to see if they work on your system, to eliminate the possibility of it being something on my end? I'm guessing we would at least know whether it is my graphics driver or just the plugin itself. They are free plugins. Anyway, thanks again for replying and trying to help, I really appreciate it. DX has nothing to do with Ableton. Dont use the system version of wine.
If you are having issues with ableton, then delete the virtual drive, and reinstall using the scripts. The scripts work fine, and there is no need to deviate from them. 13.10, and everyting non LTS is beta. period. Expect issues, bugs, and regressions. Thats why they release those distros; to test for bugs. I can say for sure, its the way the VSTs are being drawn, and whatever they were written in is not communicating correctly. As for your drivers, you are running the open source drivers:
Install the proprietary drivers for your system from AMD's website and see if that makes a difference. I can say for sure you will see a HUGE bump in performance from switching to those drivers. I already tried them, and they do the same thing on my system. You might want to try experimenting with different versions of wine in POL, or maybe ask the devs of those VSTs what they used to for the GUI, in terms of language. That may point out where we can look for a dependency. Never run the latest version of ANYTHING Ubuntu related, unless you have a specific reason to. lol. And I dont mean "it looks pretty" or "well, its new". hahahaha. If you want stability, stay with LTS. If you want to test, or you need features that are being pushed out in those versions (newer kernel support, better DRM stack, etc..), then try those. I personally switched to Arch recently, because I NEED bleeding-edge packages for my home-computing. I really like Arch, but if you are new, its NOT a good way to go, as a lot of it (the whole install process, for instance) is done by hand on the command line. Ok, just an update. I've installed 12.04 LTS and I'm running the proper driver for AMD (actually asked me if I want to install it when I installed the OS) but I have the same issue.
I was actually googling around today and found something interesting, on the Reaper forum there is a mention that you need GDI+ and MSVCRT for fix the gui problem with these plugins. I'm pretty sure I have GDI (not sure how to check this?) but I don't know what I need to install for the msvcrt. I found some information that it is part of the Visual C runtime library but I can't see anything in the Install Components of POL that corresponds to this, do you have any idea what it is I need to install? I did write to the developer today but haven't heard anything yet. |

Well I've fixed it! Had a good search for this msvcrt and found out that it is included in vcrun6 so I installed that and sure enough the gui works perfectly!
Thanks for all the help with this, I'm so happy to have these plugins working again. |

Hey guys, i have a similar issue - with Xfer Serum. Really loved this, but can't get it to work with POL. The VST responds to MIDI, but GUI is either completely black (Wine 1.7.52) or buggy (Wine 1.5 and lower). And since literally everything in the Serum GUI is movable, everything is bugged. I tried installing d3dx9 and vcrun6, but neither does help. Edité par Mootze |
