I am trying to install Skyrim and have a problem.  I get throught the installation until the program asks for the location of the "CD".  When the dialog box comes up it has three choice :

1)  Skyrim
2)  Other
3)  Refresh

Then I get an error message:

"Error:  Unable to find the CD-ROM!"

I have tried all ways to find the cd but to no avail.

Sorry if this has been covered before but I could not find the thread.

If anyone could either tell me where the relevant thread is or help with the missing cd-rom I would be most grateful.

Hi,

Use "Steam" install option, since this game is steam only, the DVD is useless and have only VERY few files, the majority of the game will be downloaded from steam servers.

What? Skyrim is STEAM ONLY?
I've had it since Dec 2012 and have yet to install... I was hoping Skyrim was just like Oblivion and Morrowind for install.... so sad.

Nematoad - This is a tricky situation because Wine can have problems loading CD-ROM/DVDs
Does your Skyrim copy have multiple Disks? If yes, then I recommend copying all the Disk data to a folder on the desktop, then try installing from there. During the part where PlayOnLinux looks for a Disk, just click "Browse", the navigate to the folder on your desktop.

Otherwise, once you get to the CD-ROM part:
1. Go back to PlayOnLinux
2. Configure
3. Wine Tab
4. Configure Wine
5. Drives Tab
6. D: drive should have the path that matches your mounted disk

Each distro mounts drives in a different place, but you can always right-click the game icon on your desktop and click properties to see the path.
Ex: in Mint the path is /media/username/game

Sorry about the delay in answering, I have been away for a few days without internet access.

I have found, to my cost about Steam.

I managed to get the disc recognised and proceeded to install. To my horror instead of doing what the dialog box said i.e. "Updating Skyrim" it then proceeded to download the whole shebang. As I have a very slow broadband connection it took AGES, something like six hours. Being tied to Steam really irritates me,if I had known that I would not have bothered to buy the DVD but would have got it from Steam directly.

Now all I need to do is fit my new 2GB video card to get the game to run properly.

You have a DVD with all the data and instead it downloads everything anyways.
I bet its still having a problem with recognizing the drive. The installer probably looks for a DVD and when it doesn't find it, begins downloading.
Oh well, now you have a full download and can back it up.

I'm going to have to do the same thing. I have a retail copy and its Steam only too.
I'll hopefully figure it out because I have the slowest broadband too. 13 Gigs is going to take forever!
