EA's Origin

The testing script disappeared from client so tried manual install

So I've been trying to get Origin running properly for a couple days, going off what I can find on the Wine AppDB and I can get it running (though sometimes it won't open and have to run a repair on the drive)

The only problem I have right now is when downloading games, I get an error that says "An unspecified download error has occurred. Please cancel and restart your download. Error 7049:408." Restarting the download does nothing.

When you attempt to download it, the download meter reads "Preparing Download" and hangs there until the error kills it. Attempting to cancel the download changes it to read "Cancelling Download" and hangs until the same error pops up.

I only have 6 games so I don't have much of a pool to test, but the only game that gets past the initial "Preparing Download" is SimCity.

In the drive, I installed the dxfullsetup, dotnet20, vcrun2008, and after getting this error I installed wininit in an attempt to fix it easily. Unfortunately that didn't do anything.

I did find an old post on here where a link to the test script for origin was posted. I checked the changelog for it and installed Desura into the drive because it was in the script. That didn't change anything. By the way I can't use the "Install this script" button on that page. It doesn't do anything for me :P

Some extra info, I was using wine 1.6-r2. 1.6-r4 also worked. I tried installing it using 1.4.1, 1.5.24, and 1.5.31 but those gave me errors.

If you run the initial virtual drive install and use the originthin exe, it'll say it didn't update properly and to use the full exe, which the message box that appears provides a link to.

Running Linux Mint LMDE 64bit

EDIT: By the way the debugger is giving me this error constantly:

EDIT: Nevermind seems there is a wine build specifically for Origin :P

Downloads working now.

Oh nice!
You found the Wine 1.5.28-Origin build?
It ran fine for me too, but I tried to download Battlefield 3 and it eventually crashed Nautilus in Ubuntu 12.04

I have a few other games to try too
I purchased that Origin Humble Bundle and got several games for $6

A couple of my friends had codes left over so I got a free Burnout Paradise and Mirror's Edge. Burnout run from Origin crashes after you login in game to your EA account when it's trying to connect to the servers. I still have a couple things to try with that, mainly different wine versions and just trying to boot the game itself.

I haven't tested anything else yet though. Hopefully I can get BF3 to run. If I can get that to work, I'll get BF4 :P

As far as WineHQ is concerned, Battlefield 3 isn't going to run until they get DirectX 10 running in Wine. Basically any game that doesn't have DirectX 9 or OpenGL compatibility won't run in Wine. But that list is pretty small... though some of these new games are looking pretty stinking good.

EA isn't all that concerned about Linux, OpenGL or Wine, so we'll have to just hop over to Steam and get some games from there.

The DX10 support for Wine is pretty even with DX9 http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectXStatus.

And I think I have 144 games on Steam, 54 of which have Steam on Linux support. Soon 55 since the Metro: Last Light devs have confirmed a Linux version.

I avoid EA as best I can, though sometimes it's not possible.

Metro too!!! Awesome!
Things are looking good for Linux and games.

Wow 144 games? That is Crazy! My list is pretty big, click on "My Games" in my signature and you'll see all of my PC games.
I'm a collector

I noticed that too about DirectX 9 & DirectX 10, but I don't have a whole lot of DX10 games. Maybe I should try Just Cause 2 again?

There are also some mutterings about Saints Row IV and Linux, though not much evidence. The Crytek Engine (Crysis games) may get ported soon as well.

And getting 144 games isn't hard when a good chunk are from Humble Bundles and Steam Sales. Though I have plenty of games I've never played and never will. Most from the THQ Humble Bundle before they went under.

And go for it. I haven't really tried to get too many DX10 games running (most of my gaming revolves around League of Legends and Crusader Kings 2 at the moment) so I wouldn't know how well it works.

This post is incredibly old. I would recommend starting a new thread. Necromancy usually doesn't help anyone. haha. :)

Necromancy?  Thats funny!

Lets come up with a geeky forumish word for it like:

  • Necrothreadcy
  • Necropostancy
