I just quit STO and it took forever for the window to dissapeare.

What is this frrom the debug log?

wine: cannot find L"C:\\\\windows\\\\system32\\\\ctfmon.exe"

According to Google, ctfmon.exe is the "Alternative User Input Services".
Totally optional, and missing from Wine I assume.

The game apparently uses it. Maybe that's why it takes forever to load. Is it avalible in POL?

Maybe it can just make use of it, which is slightly different.

Not all failures are errors; Remember you're not looking at an applicative log, but at Wine's log of API usage.

For example the copy errors above, maybe the installer tries to use advanced copy flags not supported by Wine (asynchronous copy? copy on write? copy to WinSxS? "protected" files? whatever those flags are supposed to be), and failing that falls back to a more mundane copy mode that works under Wine. If in the end the files are present, those failure messages are ok.
Same goes for your eager to make "ProgramW6432 key not found" message the other day, if it fixes no issue it was futile. It could be just the way the installer handles the installation on 64bit Windows, falling back to normal 32bit installation if it can't find the key. Not the cleanest way, but under Windows the user wouldn't get any log of this, so it may have been deemed "acceptable" way to handle the problem by the programmers.

In an extreme (but thinking of it, quite likely) case, starting ctfmon.exe could be an automatic action taken internally by a library when its API is called for the first time (native xinput maybe?), so the application has no knowledge about ctfmon.exe at all.
An example of a similar case: RAS -Remote Access Service- errors from programs using TCP/IP networking. That doesn't mean those programs are looking for modems, just that somewhere in the native HTTP/TCP/IP stack there's a hook to open a modem connection on demand.

Back to ctfmon.exe, I don't know how to install it, if it can be done.
The same message appears in World of Tanks logs, does it suffer from similar sluggishness?

I've had the same problem with Star Trek Online. When quitting Explorer.exe just locks up. So I had to use system monitor to kill it.

Also, I did a few tests with Firefox and Internet Explorer 8.
I tried the game without Internet Explorer 8 and it definitely hangs on the Arc client. Which means there is no way to even install the game. Arc installs and updates fine, but once launched, there are some problems. I also found that Wine bundles its own IE8 and its kinda buggy too. So that didn't help.
I even installed Windows Firefox in the virtual drive and it automatically set as the default browser, but when launching Arc client it ignores the default browser and still tried to launch IE8. Not sure why exactly, but thats what happens.
Really sucks because IE8 is plagued with bugs and security holes and so is Windows XP.
I would love to get away from them.

I had to use an old setup program that I got last year. Luckley it still works to setup STO.

I set a dll overide in wine for ctfmon and set it to disable. Now it takes about 8 minutes to start the game after log in and assuming no patching is needed.

8 minutes? wow, I don't think mine takes that long. Only the first time I launched, then it only takes a few minutes.
Does explorer.exe still lockup for you when closing?

Yes but if I wait a few minutes then it closes. Try waiting a few minutes. It is something we need to try and fix. Maybe check the last line or so of the PLO debug log for that wine prefix.

I was playing STO just now and it crashed to the desktop with no wine crash report or POL crash report.

Try the Debug and see if it lists the last time you launched and crashed

Yes but it didn't list anythiing beyond the patcher stuff, so nothing about running the game. I think I played for about 2 hrs before the crash.

I just thought of a way to get the arc progam to run in my script. I have discovered that the Arc program refuses to download unless you run a web broswer from windows. How do I tell POL to use IE8 from the VD to download a file instead of the system browser?

So you want Wine to use IE8 for the download while ignoring that Firefox is the default?
That may be difficult...
I know you can launch any exe with Terminal and Wine command, so there must be a way to launch IE8 and download a file from a specific URL.

If Firefox is istalled on the VD then that could be used. The file dosn't seem to be downloadable via Linux, the link won't do anything. Probabley Programmer's thinking that just because the companey dosn't provide tech support for anything but Windows and Mac. that they shoudn't allow any one to try to use a different OS.

True, but then again... we are making Linux think it running Windows with Wine.
So as far as the program knows... its Windows.

Hopfuly it succeds in convincing the program that it is running under Windows. If the source code for Windows was legaly availible then the wine programmers could look at that but no way is Bill gates ever going to allow that. I wounder why Bill keeps trying to accuse wine of copying windows source code then refusing to make Windows source code avalible to the judge for coparison. Maybe it's because he know's its not true and that he is pissed that wine guessed how windows works well enough to run Windows programs. Lol
