Hi everyone, i'm very new to playonmac and i'm struggling a bit trying to get Assassin's creed to work for me.
I have the disk and i'm using the latest version of playonmac available. Every time i've tried to get this to work it has ended pretty dramatically and i'd like to know what i'm messing up.
On the disk itself there are two programs I can run with playonmac, one is setup.exe and the other is autorun.exe.
I have run the setup.exe and gone through the installation steps that were prompted. The only way i've even found the option to play the game has been by trying to run the autorun.exe, and that option has been greyed out.
Please help

Ok. Are you actually installing assassons creed using the script listed in the Install window? Or are you trying to do a manual install? You should be able to install AC1 by: PlayOnMac -> Install -> Search for Assassins Creed -> Click install, and follow prompts. Make sure that you are using setup.exe on the AC1 disk, and also make sure that you are not choosing Assassins Creed patch or something like that.

I think manual install?
My internet isn't exactly great here so downloading the game isn't an option for me. I physically have the game disk and i'm trying to get everything set up from there. I'm installing it from setup.exe
Does that answer your question?
Also after I have it installed how do I actually play it? Are there patches I need to install?

You dont have to download the game at all. Read the following: http://www.playonmac.com/en/manual.htmlThe screenshots are a little different, but the instructions are still the same.
PlayOnMac -> Install -> Search for Assassins Creed -> Click install, and follow prompts.
Once you click Install on the main page, another window comes up with a search bar. Simply type in Assassins Creed, and select the proper game from the list. It doesnt download the game at all. It simply downloads a script that will set up the virtual drive for you, and walk you through the install process. This is how POL/POM works. Each game or program has a script that automatically configures and sets up all of the complicated stuff, and then walks you through the install with your disk. The install will ask you if you want to install from a disk, and then you point it to your disk, and follow the install. The following URL will also explain a little more about how PlayOnLinux/PlayOnMac work, which may help your understanding. http://wiki.winehq.org/PlayOnLinuxJust remember; playonlinux/playonmac is NOT a tool for downloading games. Its a tool for INSTALLING games that you already have downloaded or disks for (even Steam downloads can work).

welllll one more problem (and this time I don't think its quite as easy a fix as actually using the program right)
Trying to run the shortcut that got pasted on my desktop first leads to a prompt from X11 asking me to let it run the game in fullscreen mode.
Choosing yes invariably leads to a message saying that it crashed.

Hmm. Try to open PlayOnMac and run it from in there and see if it does the same thing. You should be able to simply open PlayOnMac and double-click on AC1 in the main screen. If that works, then it may be a bug in how POM creates shortcuts on Mac.

no dice, trying to run it from the menu in POM doesn't open anything. It just kind of sits there.
Also trying to open the desktop icon doesn't do anything either.
Should I just uninstall the game and try again from scratch?

Yeah. Delete the virtual drive for it and go through the install again. Im not sure what the issue is with that. Can you check if xQuartz is the newest version? Also, next time it crashes, post up the debug output (check the stickies for how to get this), that way we can see what caused the crash.

Yeah it has the most recent version of X11
the most recent problem was that it wasn't even crashing, trying to open it just didn't do anything.
hopefully reinstalling it will at least get me back to it crashing. Actually hopefully reinstalling it will get it to work, but you get the idea.

I know that. lol. I understand. These things can be tricky to troubleshoot. Reinstall into a fresh virtual drive, and lets try it again. Again, please remember to post the debug output. Oh, and post ALL of your computer specs, as well. We need those.

Also while installing again a program error message popped up that says "The program Detection.exe has encountered a serious proplem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvienence.
This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine. You may want to check http://appdb.winehq.org for tips about running this application.
If this problem is not present under Windows and has not been reported yet, you can report it at http://bugs.winehq.org"

Yes. Thats what I wanted. Can you also post the debug output? Detection.exe? From what I can see, its an Ubisoft file, but I cannot find out what its for. It should be installed in the virtual drive, so make sure its there. Also, check if its on the disk.
VRAM (Total): 128 MB
That may be part of your problem. I dont think that your graphics card can support this game. There are the minimum:
VGA: 256 MB DirectX® 10.0–compliant video card or DirectX 9.0–compliant card with Shader Model 3.0 or higher (NVIDIA GeForce 6800+ / ATI Radeon X1600+) (see supported list)*
This kind of gives us info, but the person that posted is not very concise: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=21540Do you still have Assassins Creed Patch installed? Delete any virtual drives that you still have related to AC1 installs, and try the install again. Make sure you are using a legit copy of this game, as well. So, now, post up your debug output, so we can see why it was crashing, please. :)

Also, I know it fails, but does it still run?

yep it still runs after I close the error message which quits detection.exe
I think I have a pretty good idea what's going on here, I think i'll quit while i'm still (somewhat) ahead
there is just no way I can get this to run properly on my computer
on the bright side I know a lot more about how to use playonmac and I can use that for lots of other things
Thank you so much for your help here I really appreciate it

So, 3rd time: Post your debug output if you want to know what the issue is. We NEED that to see what its doing. :)
