I have exactly the same issue. Ubuntu 12.10, Play on Linux and Wine version 1.4 as recommended by Play on Linux.
I need a solution before I install Windows just so I can play this game!! (Dual boot of course)

I need a solution before I install Windows just so I can play this game!! no need for dual-exclamation points... :) Anyway, are you running any desktop effects, like compiz or any desktop effects at all? I usually (in KDE) turn them off whenever running a game (ALT+SHFT+F12). Try turning off any desktop effects that are running, and try that.

I found the solution so YAY, I don't need to install Windows.
First find the file called production_Config.ini
For me this was in /home/Dobly/My Games/Path of Exile
Edit it in gedit or whatever your favourite text editor is and look for the [DISPLAY] area.
Mine had these settings...
resolution_height=0 resolution_width=0
I changed it to
resolution_height=1024 resolution_width=1280
AND IT WORKED. .
Not the idea res for my 24" monitor but at least I can run the game now.

Hi, This is interesting, it looks like some problem with resolution detection. Upgrading Wine version to benefit from xrandr support improvements may have helped with this problem too (Malcolm Fellowes recommends 1.5.6 over 1.5.22 in the AppDB though: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=25078&iTestingId=76753&bShowAll=true )

petch: Thats good to know. When did xRandR support start showing up in wine? Just curious what version numbers support it.

It's hard to tell because there have been several waves of patches. I've found mentions of xrandr in 1.5.9 and 1.5.12 changelogs but can't guarantee that the list is exhaustive ;)
