if you click on the "try this update, the web browser thinks it's a broken link. So I changed the beginning web address to "http://www.playonlinux.com/repository/download_update.php?id=1430", but now the web browser says "Please open this file with PlayOnLinux or PlayOnMac". What's up with this thing?

That update has been validated, that's the current version already. But if you want to try non (yet) validated script versions you have to register playonlinux:// URL scheme in your browser with playonlinux-url_handler script

This appears to no longer work using the current GOG installer. After installation, the executable runs and the resolution is changed but after the intro the screen goes black. I am running Mint 17 with the built-in drivers on an AMD graphics card (Radeon HD 6800.) Do I need to install proprietary drivers or take additional setup steps?

The script is up-to-date vs current installer version (2.0.0.8)
