Hello.

I am not new to Linux (I've played with it over the years), but I recently decided to go all the way and make my computer Linux only isntead of dual booting. I switched to Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) 64-bit edition. My desktop is Gnome Classic (no effects).

I have the following hardware on my computer
HP HDX 16 1140-US
HD: 500 GB Hitachi Travelstar 7K500
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600  @ 2.40GHz
Video Card: Nvidia 9600GT Mobile
Memory: 2 GB


After setting things up, I installed PlayonLinux because I heard that was the best way to use Office 2007 in Wine. I installed my copy of Office 2007 Student Edition (April 2007 version) and it seemed to work fine. Unfortunately, I could not install the service packs using the program itself because the server could not recognize my computer (I'm guessing it installs them through Windows Update). So I downloaded the service packs from Microsoft's web site.

I tried the following steps:
a) Opened configuration for Excel 2007.
b) Clicked on the Miscellaneous tab
c) Clicked 'Run a .exe file in this virtual drive'
d) Let the installer run

Now the installers for SP1 and SP2 ran fine. I installed two additional versions of WINE (1.5.14 and 1.3.22) along with the ones currently installed (the script for Office 2007 installed 1.2.3 and there was another one called System). I set it to 1.3.22 and I ran Word 2007. It ran fine, but it didn't seem to reflect the changes that installing SP1 and SP2 should have (ex. ability to save to PDF and ODT). Then, when I ran SP3, Wine displayed a message saying that the installer failed.

I then decided to try installing the Service Packs by using 'Install a non-listed program". I figured that since the Service Packs are updates, I should use 'Edit or update an existing application'. But when I click Next, it tells me to select an existing application. Since these updates are for all Office programs (so I think..), I clicked the checkbox for 'Show virtual drive' and then I selected the drive which had Office2007 on it. I click next and I don't choose any options and then I get an option to create another virtual drive. This is where I get stuck because I do not understand why installling an update should require another virtual drive and I don't want to risk screwing up my settings. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
That's weird, either a bug or a misunderstanding.
Another way you can do that is,
Configure button > (select virtual drive) > Miscellaneous tab > Run an ".exe" in this virtual drive

I tried your suggestion. The first two service packs seemed to install fine, but the third service pack failed to install. And it doesn't allow me to save with the OpenDocument format or export to PDF. I'm not too worried about those. I'm more worried because I want the security updates that came with those service packs so I don't put my computer at risk for infection.

today I have install this awsome software on my Ubuntu 13.04. But I have also problems to install the servicepacks :-( Did someone solve this Problem? How can I install the servicepacks for Office 2007?

la solucion de petch es perfecta. Probado en ubuntu 14.04

configuracion => office2007 => miselanea => ejecutar un archivo .exe

u buscar el archivo .exe que contiene el Service Packs de office 2007
