Borderlands General protection fault

Message pops up while splash screen is present. Wine 1.5.9 (tried 1.3 1.4 1.5.3 1.5.8)

Steam version of the game. Installed and starts booting. Error shown is:

General protection fault!

History: Address = 0xe02919 (filename not found) [In c:\\blah\\Borderlands.exe]

I've googled and found windows users getting this error, who solved by reinstalling vcredist + physX so I did the same, but no luck. I've got this running in several prefixes. So its certainly not something that can be solved by rerunning the installer. Anyone running steam borderlands GOTY?
