Sims 3 will not run (or do anything)

Hello!

I recently just got Ubuntu 12.04 and this is my first time using any other OS other than Windows ones. I had just installed PlayOnLinux (4.0.19), set it up and went through the installation of Sims 3. After installing The Sims 3 & The Sims 3 Manager both appeared in the PlayOnLinux program as well as shortcuts on my desktop. When I tried to run The Sims 3 through PlayOnLinux I was warned about something about HTML and Gecko (which I'm not sure what that is) and when I agreed to install whatever was needed, the window closed back to the main screen of PlayOnLinux and nothing happened.

I tried launching again from PlayOnLinux but now nothing happens when I do. No loading anything, no sounds of my computer thinking, nothing. I exited out of PlayOnLinux, went back in and still nothing happened. Trying the desktop icons, still nothing.

While trying to do 'playonlinux --run "The Sims 3"' I get the following;

[POL_System_CheckFS] Message: Checking filesystem for TS3.exe
[POL_System_SetArch] Message: POL_ARCH set to x86
[POL_Wine_SetVersionEnv] Message: Setting wine version path: 1.3.4, x86
[POL_Wine_SetVersionEnv] Message: "/home/kevin/.PlayOnLinux//wine/linux-x86/1.3.4" exists
[POL_Wine] Message: Running wine-1.3.4 TS3.exe
[POL_Wine] Message: Notice: PlayOnLinux deliberately disables winemenubuilder. See http://www.playonmac.com/fr/page-26-Winemenubuilder.html
[POL_Wine] Message: Wine return: 0
kevin@shadynasty:~$ wine: cannot find L"C:\\\\windows\\\\system32\\\\plugplay.exe"
wine: Call from 0x7b8388e2 to unimplemented function msvcr80.dll._set_abort_behavior, aborting

I went into the Manage Wine Versions menu on POL and it said that I have Wine 1.3.4 installed. I checked another thread on the forum with the same problem and they got it running after installing Wine 1.3.4 however I cannot. They also got a different message when trying to do 'playonlinux --run "The Sims 3"'

Any help on how to run this? Unfortunately this is the only game I have onhand so I cannot test another game on POL to see if it's just The Sims 3 or my POL/computer.

You will need to download TS3.exe and TSLHost.dll (google them) and replace the originals (found in Home/PlayOnLinux's virtual drives/TheSims3/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Game/Bin... unless you've loaded it elsewhere, of course). You should be good to go, once this is accomplished. I will admit, however, I haven't been able run the patch for some reason, but the game runs just fine otherwise. Good luck. I hope this helps.

After replacing TS3.exe and TSLHost.dll, the game will still not run through POL. When running command 'playonlinux --run "The Sims 3"' I get still the following;

[POL_System_CheckFS] Message: Checking filesystem for TS3.exe
[POL_System_SetArch] Message: POL_ARCH set to x86
[POL_Wine_SetVersionEnv] Message: Setting wine version path: 1.3.4, x86
[POL_Wine_SetVersionEnv] Message: "/home/kevin/.PlayOnLinux//wine/linux-x86/1.3.4" exists
[POL_Wine] Message: Running wine-1.3.4 TS3.exe
[POL_Wine] Message: Notice: PlayOnLinux deliberately disables winemenubuilder. See http://www.playonmac.com/fr/page-26-Winemenubuilder.html
[POL_Wine] Message: Wine return: 0
kevin@shadynasty:~$ wine: cannot find L"C:\\\\windows\\\\system32\\\\plugplay.exe"
wine: Call from 0x7b8388e2 to unimplemented function msvcr80.dll._set_abort_behavior, aborting

Could it be possible that I downloaded the wrong files or is it a completely different problem?

I suppose it's possible. TS3.exe is 10.7MB and TSLHost.dll is 4.2MB

Also don't install the updater. It crashed each time I accidentally clicked next through that mess. I've read that it doesn't work. I've seen that is quite true. Supposedly, the patch/update in POL works, although, as I've stated- I have not had luck with it. I get the message telling me to install The Sims 3 first (which, since I've played it many times now, I can attest that it is, in fact, installed).

Good luck with your installation.

After replacing the files again with the ones you listed (again but with correct filesize) I am still getting the plugplay.exe error.

Even if it turns out that you cannot help me, I have to say that of all the times that I've asked for help on anything related to Linux/Ubuntu, you've been the most helpful and I'm greatly appreciative of it.

Okay, so I've made some progress. Since the Run button does not work, nor does the command line, I decided to run TS3.exe using Wine. The game loads up past the first loading screen, but when it comes to the main menu, it gives me an error saying that says "The Sims 3 cannot run. The installation is not complete. Please reinstall and try again."

I feel like I'm SO CLOSE x.X

Hmm it seems the above post didnt go through...how annoying!

I too am having the same problem. Did you ever find a solution?

One other quirk i notice is every time I start playonlinux it says "it seems this is the first time you have ran playonlinux" and then fails to install the windows fonts.

When I try and run it via Wine it states that i do not have the correct hardware.

I am trying to do this on a Acer Emachine`EM350 with Ubunto, so im not expecting it to work well, but i am hoping to get it to run.

Here is the log report i get when i enable Debugging in Sims 3:

[POL_System_SetArch] Message: POL_ARCH set to x86

I'm also getting this error: "wine: Call from 0x7b8388e2 to unimplemented function msvcr80.dll._set_abort_behavior, aborting." I tried installing vcrun2008, but it didn't make a difference. What's strange is that when the game first came out, it worked just fine. They must have done something to wine.
