Steam won't start

Hello everybody!
My windows computer's hard drive crashed, so I am attempting to use my Linux machine to talk to my friends in Great Britain. I wanted to use the steam client to do this. Using games would be a nice bonus! I installed playonlinux, the windows fonts, and steam. However, when I click "steam" in my application list or I highlight "steam" and click "run" in the playonlinux window, nothing happens. No cpu speed change, nothing. Any ideas?

Try latest Wine or try to set Windows Vista in Wine configuration. Please say which one worked.

I tried setting Wine in the configuration of PlayOnLinux to both system (1.01) and the kind you can download in the program itself. I also tried going into the wine settings for both the built-in and system wine. I changed the setting to windows vista. However, steam still will not start from playonlinux. I tried starting steam from wine's program list, and I got a message updating steam and saying the service needed to be installed. I okayed installing the service, the window disappeared, and it has not returned.

Any ideas? Thank you for the response.

Sorry for 3 consecutive posts, but I tried updating the wine prefixes in the steam config and I got a log in screen. I typed in my information, logged in, and the window promptly disappeared again after a cpu spike.

After a few tries of clicking on the steam program in the program bar at the bottom of my desktop, the login screen reappeared. I pressed the login buttton, the cpu usage dropped, the window disappeared. Dunno what happened. Please help!
