So, apparently the gta4browser error does not prevent the game from starting. I can just ignore it.
I see the copyright warnings, the 3 logos (2 times "R" logo andthen "Grand Thef Auto 4") and that's when the game crashes now. Still with a lot of stuff in the terminal.
I could swear I've seen a post somewhere about someone crashing at the exact same step but I can't find it back...

Edit: solved by changing the wine version used.
Normally script takes care of all beside crack, so you've probably changed Wine version to wrong Wine version after installation of the game.

I guess I did at some point...
Anyway, I made a clean install, patched the game to the latest version, also put the xlive.dll file in the system 32 folder just in case, and I'm back at the same point as in my last post. I also tried to install d3dx9 and d3dx10 through Winetricks as said in one of the tests at winehq, without effect. Warnings, logos, and crash. Any idea?

You need nothing more than playonlinux script and right applied crack. No monkeying with xlive ore winetricks is needed.
I see the copyright warnings, the 3 logos (2 times "R" logo andthen "Grand Thef Auto 4") and that's when the game crashes now.
That means that you use right wine otherwise you wouldn't see R two times. Install latest NVIDIA drivers. Edited by NSLW

Thanks for the idea, but it wasn't the solution.
Clean install, I let POL download the latest patch itself, upgraded the Nvidia drivers to the recommended version on their site (195.36.15), and... Still no luck. I still got the same result.
This time I did not try to add anything else. Just the game, the patch, and whatever is actually required.
Each time I get an error about .NET 3.0 when installing the game... Is it important? Other than that the installation works fine. Edited by OldLodgeSkins

I don't remember any errors about .NET Framework but I also don't see any .NET 3.0 files installed on my gta 4 prefix.

It says something about language packs that require .NET 3.0...
But it's during the installation of the social club, which if I understand correctly, we do'nt really care about. Edited by OldLodgeSkins

I don't know if .NET 3.0 is important at installation, I don't care about that because it doesn't cause troubles to me. Did you try with various NO-DVDs?

Previously yes, but not during my last attempt... I'll try again.
Edit: looks like it would have something to do with the latest versions of the games and the cracks that go with them... What version are you running? Maybe I should not have updated to teh latest version of GTA available? Edited by OldLodgeSkins

I'm running on 1.0.0.4 (the latest) which was installed automatically by POL. I agree that I had problems with NO-DVD and latest GTA 4 version but that were problems during play (I mean drunk camera : ) ) and not at start of the game.
You can check if your prefix with GTA 4 is as big as mine. Mine is 15.5 GB big.

I've got exactly the same size...
I've tried all sorts of cracks, not only Razor's, none worked. The one that gave me the logos (the only one to go that far) in the Razor for 1.0.0.4.
Could the fact that I'm using an European version of this game make a difference? I don't know if they've distributed the exact same software everywhere or if there are differences... Not sure it's relevant though. I haven't seen any crack mentioning a region / country.

Maybe this will help...
I've removed the "winedebug=-all" line in the startup script. Here is the output, right when the game crashes, just before I kill it:
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_LoadKeyboardLayout L"0", 0002: stub!
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_MapVirtualKeyEx keyboard layout (nil) is not supported
fixme:dinput:SysMouseAImpl_Acquire Clipping cursor to (0,0)-(1440,900)
fixme:wininet:InternetCheckConnectionW

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xa1641374 at address 0xa1641374 (thread 001f), starting debugger...
Rings any bell?

I haven't got this line in terminal. Install openssl package (and maybe packages with ntlm in name). Please report if that helped. If yes then I'll include appropriate information at installing GTA4.
BTW. I updated patched Wine for this game. To use it start installer once again and choose update wine version (No need for reinstalling GTA 4) Edited by NSLW

Openssl was already installed... I've installed every 32-bit compatibility package I could find in my package manager. I've also installed all the ntlm-something I could find although I don't see what openldad could have to do with this but I added them just in case.
Result: still the same.
I've then tried the new wine version: still no luck... Same error :(

Still not working, but I've got something you might be interested in.
Since it was about wininet I decided to try some of the wininet.dll files that can be found out there (after making a backup of the original) and at some point I got this:
fixme:ras:RasEnumConnectionsW (0x13e2b8,0x33c59c,0x702783ec),stub!
fixme:ras:RasEnumConnectionsW RAS support is not implemented! Configure program to use LAN connection/winsock instead!

fixme:ras:RasEnumEntriesW ((nil),(null),0x9972de0,0x33c26c,0x9972acc),stub!
err:ntlm:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path.
err:ntlm:SECUR32_initNTLMSP Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.
fixme:crypt:CRYPT_RegControl 4: stub
fixme:secur32:schan_InitializeSecurityContextW Using hardcoded "NORMAL" priority
fixme:wintrust:HTTPSCertificateTrust (0x9976b50)
fixme:wintrust:HTTPSFinalProv (0x9976b50)
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xa1641374 at address 0xa1641374 (thread 0020), starting debugger...
I did not get anything about ntlm_auth in my previous searches, still I've finally found it's part of samba_windbind. I've installed it and that particular error does not appear anymore. So I guess you can add samba_windbind as part of your requirements.

I'm back on a clean install after doing lots of tests with DLLs / direct3d and such... So far, no luck, but maybe a clue:
fixme:d3d_surface:surface_load_ds_location No up to date depth stencil location
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_LoadKeyboardLayout L"0", 0002: stub!
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_MapVirtualKeyEx keyboard layout (nil) is not supported
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_LoadKeyboardLayout L"0", 0002: stub!
fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_MapVirtualKeyEx keyboard layout (nil) is not supported
(... and lots of these)
fixme:wininet:InternetCheckConnectionW
err:wininet:NETCON_secure_connect SSL_connect failed: 12157
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xa1641374 at address 0xa1641374 (thread 001f), starting debugger...
I've been watching the terminal before the crash. The 1st line was there when the logos were showing. Then when the game crashes, the 1st line about the keyboard appears. That's precisely when it crashes.
Any idea? Edited by OldLodgeSkins

Got rid of the .NET error by installing with Winetricks, in this order (this is important): vcrun2005, dotnet20, dotnet30 from Winetricks. Don't install dotnet20 alone from POL as it seems it requires vcrun2005, if you do that you won't be able to run any application anymore.
The game still crashes with the same output though.
