Tried all the scripts, only the last of these works but, when the advertisement ask me to press forward to start the download the patch it freezes and nothing happens. pinch: Then i burn an iso of shivering islands to patch oblivion manually via the setup (always) using playonlinux... tah-danh! CD-ROM not found! Tried to paste the path= CD_ROM not found. Ok, ok, cool down; tried to past the path using a simply drag 'n' drop of the exe or ini files into the dvd. NOTHING!!! Aaargh!!!:@

@drakojan and Ataronchronon
Please type in terminal
cd PATHTOMYCDROM
ls
for every CD/DVD which POL hasn't accepted. Then please post results here (the best would be to give labels for those CD/DVD)

I think I've got the path wrong, but everything I've tried keeps giving me no such directory.
But I did move my iso to the desktop and do it there and it just listed the things I have on my desktop.

The path will (probably) look something like:
/mnt/cdrom0/or maybe:
/media/cdrom0/
"cdrom0" maybe is "cdrom1" or just "cdrom" on your system.

Results:
autorun.inf data4.cab DXREDIST Readme.txt setup.inx
data1.cab data5.cab engine32.cab Setup.bmp setup.isn
data1.hdr data6.cab layout.bin setup.exe
data2.cab data7.cab Oblivion.ico setup.ibt
data3.cab data8.cab OblivionLauncher.exe setup.ini

I also cannot get the official add-ons to work, I have installed them and the needed files are in the right place but I am not getting the quests pop up in-game.

@Ataronchronon
Everything seems to be right with your CD (iso image). I don't know why it returns you an error.

I guess I can carry the CD around until I figure it out.
But I still can't get the add-ons to work, it should pop up the quests when I play but I get nothing.

Edit: I just restarted POL and tried my iso again and it worked, don't know why it didn't before but hallelujah!

If it's Shivering Isle add on and POL displays you that it can't find DVD then do the same as I advised above for Shivering Isle DVD. Also give the language version you're trying to install.

I'm installing everything in English, and I don't have the Shivering Isles DVD so I'll do that later when I get home.

What kind of results should I be seeing for the Shivering Isles .iso from the "ls" command?

You should see setup.exe, English, Spanish etc.

How does terminal output looks like when you try to install Knight of the nine?

Didn't try it; I don't really like that expansion. I might later, but I'd much rather have Shivering Isles working.
Tried to install again from an .iso and it says unable to find the CD ROM drive, even if I open the CD and click install instead of using POL.

This "running by itself" problem is due to improper detection of a joystick, I had this problem too, you need to open your "Oblivion.ini" file which is located in your "My Games/Oblivion" folder, find the setting called "bUse Joystick=1" and change it to "bUse Joystick=0" :)

I have seen this sort of problem before with other games, so I guessed where to look, but hopefully this information helps someone else ;-)

Oh, and anyone who is having trouble installing the game under WINE or POL, you can install on windows and copy the files over, for example through a dual-boot or in a virtual machine, and then the only registry settings you need to import in WINE for Oblivion to play are these:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Bethesda Softworks]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Bethesda Softworks\\Oblivion]

"Installed Path"="C:\\\\Games\\\\Oblivion\\\\"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Bethesda Softworks\\Oblivion\\1.00.0000]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Bethesda Softworks\\Oblivion - Shivering Isles/Knights of the Nine]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Bethesda Softworks\\Oblivion - Shivering Isles/Knights of the Nine\\1.00.0000]

So you can just install in Windows (real or virtual), or copy the install from a previous hard drive or other computer, and then save the above text as a .reg file which you import with "regedit" within WINE. If you only have the base game and not SI/KotN (I have the Game of the Year edition which includes these) then just delete the last two lines of that code and use the rest. Obviously, change the C:\\\\Games\\\\Oblivion to whatever your Oblivion folder is - and make sure you keep the double slashes.

I wanted to share this information since it can save a lot of time reinstalling when you really don't need to :) If you are also intending to use things like Wrye Bash, OBMM, etc for running mods, then it is probably neccessary to install these again over the top, but those only take a minute or so each, so the time saving is still good.

P.S: One other thing, if you are trying to play on a brand new setup then you may need to download and install DirectX 9 since the Oblivion install process normally will include this.

Good luck and have fun playing!

EDIT: This process can also help if you're having trouble installing mods... if you install them using real or virtualised windoze then copy the files over (or use the files in-place when running in WINE/POL) it may be easier as a short-term fix instead of waiting for WINE/POL to update...

I have all these mods installed on a previous windoze setup:

And as far as I can tell they are all working 100% as well as they did in my previous windows install, after simply importing those registry lines, installing DirectX, installing Wrye Python, reactivating all the mods in OblivionLauncher then running BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software) to make sure the mods are loaded in the best order. I do have problems with the SFX not playing (but the music and voices do), but that is a known WINE issue and not related to my manner of install kludging ;-)

Anyone who would like help getting this exact same setup working, or just the basic game, you can email me at oblivionhelp-15BL16@gliktch.com - I can't help with complicated (lots of mods) setups that are different from mine though, it would take way too much time °_°
