Hey guys,
I am gonna try to install F.E.A.R. at least without an extension pack. Just the game. I tried to use the installation script which is offered in the POL db.
The POL wizard told me, that the there is a download failure. The exact message is:
Following server is no longer available: www.depannagedisquedur.fr
After confirming that message the installation aborted.
If I am right, then the script wants to download the d3dx9_36.dll from the following address: http://www.depannagedisquedur.fr/dll/d3dx9_36.dll
and then move the dll to $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/system32/d3dx9_36.dll
At this state the POL installation wizard already created the F.E.A.R. prefix and downloaded the Wine version 1.1.25. The wizard did also download the d3dx9_36.dll from the French website and moved the dll to the target folder.
So why do I get the message that the address above don't exist? I am also able to download the dll from the website via firefox. So, the address definitely exist.
Did anybody install the game via POL successfully?
What could be the problem?
Here some information about my system:
Distribution : Kubuntu 9.10_x86_64
Kernel : Linux 2.6.31-14-generic
GPU : GeForce 9600M GT/PCI/SSE2
GPU Driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.42
Installed Wine-Version : wine-1.1.32
POL downloaded Wine-Version: 1.1.25 for F.E.A.R.
POL-Version: 3.7.1

That's pretty fast. Thanks for that!
But, there is now another message:
The following server is no longer available:
sd-1.archive-host.com
Sorry for any inconveniences.

@Berillions
Don't host d3d9_36.dll Use the one from DirectX from our repository http://mulx.playonlinux.com/files/ or from other dll server.

@NSLW
I think my my Internet connection speed is okay with about 760 kB/s.
It's strange. My browser can download the files from both servers and the installation script doesn't work.

All right. I am gonna try the changed script later/tomorrow.
I have just an another question. I am very new with playonlinux and I have never used prefixes before. The question is: Do I have to install d3dx9 with every wine prefix? Can I use winetricks for that in every prefix?
Or in another words. Is there a good wiki or something like that to get some information about the wine prefix thing? The documentation on this website is not really filled with detailed information.
Anyway. Thanks for your support.

All right. Installation runs well, very well.
I just can't get the game start.
The game is patched with version 1.08 and after starting the game with the original FEAR.exe I get the pop-up message that FEAR.exe occurs a critical error.
The console shows me the following:
PlayOnLinux v3.7.1
Checking python : [ Ok ]
Running First Encounter Assault Recon
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x993717 (thread 0009), starting debugger...
After starting the game with the no-cd exe I get the following pop-up message:
Unable to initialize the renderer to a valid video mode
The output from the console in this case is:
PlayOnLinux v3.7.1
Checking python : [ Ok ]
Running First Encounter Assault Recon
error_handler: C:\\users\\Public\\Anwendungsdaten\\Trymedia\\data\\
error_handler: C:\\users\\Public\\Anwendungsdaten\\Trymedia\\data\\

Am I too stupid to install and play the game under linux?
What do I have to do?
Any ideas?
cheers

The game doesn't work with the original .exe.
You must to use a patch NO-CD.

That what I was thinking. But I tried to use the no-cd patched exe and got the message above.
Another question. What happens when you execute the Config.exe from the F.E.A.R. folder? I can start the configuration program via POL but there is no resolution to choose. There is in the first tab nothing to chose. Is there something else to pay attention on?
Or is there an incompatibility with my 64-Bit kubuntu? Damn, I just wanna understand the issue to solve it.

I did it!
The problem caused by the Nvidia 190.42 driver. This driver is at the beta state so I downgraded to 185.36. Now it works fine. Thanks for your support.
