Hi,

I have tried to install Fallout 3 with Wine alone and I have a deep appreciation for how easy things are made in POL. I have managed to get through the installation without a problem: both the game and the patch 1.6, as in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnS-gf6FLLY&feature=response_watch.

However when I attempt to launch the game I get the following:
$ playonlinux --run "Fallout 3 Launcher"
PlayOnLinux v3.6

Checking python :                     [ Ok ]wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x4085fc (thread 0009), starting debugger...

I am getting a Program Error window:

The program FalloutLauncher.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

This can be caused by a problem in the program or a dificiency in Wine. You may want to check http://appdb.winehq.org for tips about running this application.

If this problem is not present under Windows and has not been reported yet, you can report it at http://bugs.winehq.org.

I can hear the music and see the background menu but without any options visible to choose from.

When I close the Error Window I get the following output in the terminal:

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x004085fc).

I should add that I run this particular copy of Fallout 3 (without the patch) in Win XP on the same machine, which is: core duo 2GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 256MB GPU (ATIx1600).

I would greatly appreciate if you could find a moment to take a look at my problem and direct me. Sorry for my bad English.

I am encountering the same problem, though my system specs are different. This is a AMD quad core using the mobo's onboard nForce 780a SLI, running the 1.6 patch. I am using the latest Driver, 180.44. However this is an identical error for me, with a slightly different debug dump. I'll forgo the posting of it, unless it will be of use.

Any insight will be of great assistance.

@Mike
Fallout 3 probably won't run on your video card on Linux.

That is bad news. Thanks for looking into it though.

Did you try to set unpatched version(you don't even need to reinstall)?
What is your distro?

Maybe it's 64 bit OS issue.

If Scnd101 tried with unpatched Wine and it doesn't work then there may be something wrong with video drivers for 32 bit although he has 64 OS. In Fedora have to install separate package with drivers so the games in Wine can work.

i've tried the following combinations:

wine patched and fallout patched: KO
wine patched and fallout NOT patched: KO
wine NOT patched and fallout NOT patched: it works! until it loads the game then it crashes with this message: wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0xad8cdb (thread 002b), starting debugger...

@NSLW could you be more detailed? What package did you install?
Thanks in advance

I advise you to patch and compile Wine yourself or with help of unofficial plugin POL Helper. It's strange for me that my patches doesn't work for you.

User metal3d send me information that he additionally has to install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i386 on his Fedora 10 64 bit to even run The Sims 3 so with Fallout

I've got that installed (lib32-nvidia-utils on arch). And Doom 3 (through wine) worked fine, so that's not the case

What differences do you expect patching wine myself? Where can i download the patches?

It may be that our distros aren't compatible each other and that's why my patch doesn't work. If you compile Wine yourself then you'll confirm or reject that.

You'll find link to patch on AppDB site for Fallout 3.
