After not having installed anything in POL for a few months (September), I'm now finding that I can't install anything, or run installers through "Run a .exe file in this virtual drive". This includes an installer that worked fine in September. But already-installed software runs fine.

Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS

PlayOnLinux 4.2.12

When a previously-functional installer is run using "Run a .exe file in this virtual drive" from a virtual drive that runs the (already-installed) software just fine:

Would someone who knows more than I about POL please give me a hint as to what to try, or what might be going wrong?

Figured it out - to fix an issue where text wasn't showing up in games (the "Wine cannot find the FreeType font library" issue), I had renamed the libz.so* files under PlayOnLinux/wine/linux-x86/1.3.34/lib . Turns out that breaks installation. Grrr... Renaming them back allows me to install, but now the text is missing again.

Use a newer version of POL (ie: v4.3, instead of v4.2.12), this should help.
