Now, for some reason when I try to get it to work, I get no sound no matter what version of wine I use, and wine 3.20 makes it to where the character models are white and there are no flags on the flag posts in the start screen. wine 1.6 makes it to where there are flags on the start screen but when in the game, everything is whited out.

1. What is your OS and version ? (32 or 64 bits ?).

2. Does the comment at the bottom of the script page help you ?

Make sure you have the newest version of PlayOnLinux:  4.3.4

Then I would try using a newer version of Wine like 4.0.2 or 4.21-staging

Have you made any changes to your system?  Video card? Video drivers?

How do you get the latest version? I have 4.2.10.

Um, the wine versions only go up to 3.20 in the menu.

OS in MINT 18.3 cinnamon 64 bit.

Also, when I try to use the pre done TLJ installer... the first time it would not install windowsxp-kb975337-x86-ENU.exe even after I changed repositories. It said 0.0 out of ? MB was downloaded and just stuck there. I tried a different repository and it said Https://web.archive.org/web/20140615000000/http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/b/c/abc45517-97a0-4cee-a362-1957be2f24e1/WindowsXP-KB975337-x86-ENU.exe   Error ! TLJ was at least sort of starting at one point, but for some reason the screen would be tiled and low res, but screen shots would show normally. Now it won't start at all for no apparent reason.

And my system is the same as ever.

The newest version of PlayOnLinux is here:  https://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html

Download the Ubuntu version:  PlayOnLinux_4.3.4.deb

Install it manually, then you can use newer versions of Wine.

That windowsxp-kb975337 package will have to install with Wine set to Windows XP.  But not even sure if you need it?

Sometimes those old packages are required for Dot Net Framework, Windows Media Player, etc.

Okay, so when downloading d3dx9_43 (and this was a second time because I switched from wine 3.14 to 3.20 so I figured I needed to download the d3dx9's again)... some of them just gave me the spinny thing and did nothing, but when I tired d3dx9_43 again I got Warning !! The signature of the script you are trying to run is NOT valid  PlayOnLinux has not approved this script and will not be responsible from it. Please ensure you know what you are doing!

Okay, wow! I tried shutting off play on linux and then restarting it and redownloading the d3dx9's... and those downloads worked properly. Now TLJ still has the screen issue but with just too low a resolution and for some reason showing me my desktop but no more tiling, but it still shows normal in screenshots.

Dreamfall on the other hand looks to work now, but there is no sound. Neither of them have sound for some reason.

Hmm, sounds like you are offline or something.  Any time I tried to install anything in PlayOnLinux offline I would get a bunch of warnings.

Did you install PlayOnLinux 4.3.4?

Um, how exactly do I install that POL 4.3.4 package?

booman Tuesday 17 December 2019 at 22:34

Download the .deb file and double-click in Mint.  It will launch the package installer and install it for you.

Don't worry about uninstalling the old one, it takes care of it for you.  And it doesn't touch your wineprefixes (Virtual Drives)

Would this have anything to do with the sound issue?

It says I need xterm. What is that?

What is "staging" and "rc1"?

booman Tuesday 17 December 2019 at 22:59

Alsa might have something to do with Sound, but Mint comes with Pulseaudio which uses Alsa.  So it may be something to do with the older versions of Wine..... maybe

You can install xterm through the Terminal.  Or, look in Menu for synaptic package manager.  Then search for xterm and install it.

Staging and RC1 are testing versions of Wine.  I only use Staging versions if the stable 4.0.2 doesn't run the game.  Staging has extra features that may not be in the stable versions.

I have tried 5.0-rc1, 4.21 and 4.20. I still get no sound on either game, and I get screen issues (it just shows my desktop, or part of it extra large in low res... no more tiling though) in TLJ. Video seems to work well in dreamfall though.

I have pulse audio-module-x11 installed. I see a bunch of also stuff in the software manager, but none of it is checked. What needs to be installed?

flatiron Tuesday 17 December 2019 at 23:43

Oh, wait, some alsa stuff is installed... so WTF? Do you think that maybe it's selecting the wrong audio device? I have two show up in under the audio menu on MINT and also on Kazam, but one does not work.
