I see someone else posted about this game fairly recently at:

https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-16101-ISSUE_Error_Number_0x80040702__failed_to_load_dll_dsetup.html

Anyways I followed his directions and everything seemed to work for me as well with the exception of sound. The sound has a horrible echo and the mouse isn't as smooth as in the host system although the latter might be normal. Anyways here is what my debugger says:

I of course can post any more related information upon request. Any help is appreciated.

I am currently working on a new video tutorial because the first one I put on youtube was trash. I used Ubuntu Studio 18.10 to install it, wich may have different audio configurations than Ubuntu 18.10 because Studio is geared to audio recording artists mostly.

It may help if you make sure that these libraries are set  to Native:

You find this in "Configure WINE" , Libraries Tab, Existing Overrides:

dmime

dmscript

dmstyle

dswave

=============

dsound must be set to (builtin)

dmcompos is set to (native,builtin)

dmband (native,builtin)

dmsynth (native,builtin)

dmusic (native,builtin)

dmusic32 (native,builtin)

Also in "WINE configurations" , Audio Tab, I have the Devices (Built-in Audio Analog Stereo & Pulseaudio) set to Stereo. I dont know if that helps but that is how mine is set.

I got caught up trying to get AVP 2010 working with Steam Play (and Im pulling teeth) but I assure you a better step-by-step for AVP2 in regular Ubuntu 18.10 will be coming soon -possibly by end of this week. It is my favorite game just under Oblivion.

Thanks for response. I am using regular Ubuntu 18.10 as well at the moment. I adjusted libraries and have same result. I am using a trashy work computer to try to get this game working so the hardware just simply might not be up to par to work smoothly.

Well there are less errors in the debug after adjusting the libraries so it must have done something!

What are your hardware specs? I can run AVP2 pretty good on an old machine with a core2duo with integrated graphics from the motherboard and like 2Gigs of RAM. Here is the game's requirements:

https://gamesystemrequirements.com/game/aliens-vs-predator-2

One thing I mentioned in the video was that on my regular Ubuntu 18.10 machine I did a directx full install because I had thought that would fix the dll error I was getting after installing directx8 through the install CD. That was the main difference between the Studio install and the vanilla Ubuntu install.

Did you try experimenting with different wine verions? I tried 3.10 and 2.20, both staging and non staging. There may be others that make it work for you.

The one error that stands out to me is this one: (even though all of it is literally jarble to me)

err:winediag:MIDIMAP_drvOpen No software synthesizer midi port found, Midi sound output probably won't work.

I stayed up all night to make that video, and all night the night before installing it on my own machine, so I was very tired when I made that video. That was why I did it differently.  I also wasnt wrting anything down, which was really dumb. Now I have an install log file to follow for the next video. Here is the summary of differences:

I used these in Ubuntu Studio 18.10
===============================
corefonts
d3dx9
devenum
directmusic
dsound - (set to built in)
tahoma
vcrun2005
xact
xaudio
================
I used these on the Ubuntu 18.10 machine

corefonts
d3dx9
devenum
dsound - set to built in (Wine) <--make sure you do this. Its the only thing that made the echo go away for me after testing it a few times
dxfullsetup
tahoma
vcrun2005
xact
xaudio
