Selecting a Avatar - offsite image?

I wanted to replace my "man in the myst" avatar. On my profile I have a field where I can place a url.  I then looked what other POL members used as their avatar URL an apparnetly everyone is using a differnet url with an entierly different host.

  1. How does one supposed to select a new avatar on POL?
  2. In my understanding, using offsite is a receipt for broken images on the POL-site. How about hosting the images on POL directly?

We don't host avatar here, feel free to use any other image hosting site to host yours.
