I'm looking at this page: https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-2413.html

And I am wondering how to install this? I've tried to "run a local script" but it doesnt do anything.

Sorry for such a noob question.

Try a manual install with wine-staging 2.9.

You will need to install a package for dxtn textures :

sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0

And set wine windows version to win 7

Instalation works, but the program doesn't launch for me...

How to do :

POL->Install-> Install an unlisted program

You follow the instruction and use wine 2.9-staging

PS: maybe you will need this :

Download www.dm.origin.com/download/legacy (legacy OriginThinSetup.exe).
Create a fresh wineprefix (32-bit).
Run the installer and leave the default options.
When Origin launches it will tell you that "Your update could not be completed.".
Download origin-a.akamaihd.net/Origin-Client-Download/origin/live/OriginUpdate_9_12_0_34172.zip and put the contents into your_wine_prefix/drive_c/Program\ Files/Origin/ , so that that folder contains a Origin.exe file.
You can then start this Origin.exe and log in.

PS2 : it works for me

I installed Origin last week and didn't need the .zip file

All I did was:

  • Use Wine 2.0-staging
  • Download the legacy OriginThinSetup.exe
  • Set Windows version to Windows XP
  • Installed corefonts, d3dx9, vcrun2008, 2010, 2012, tahoma
  • Run the installer
  • Log in to Origin

Sometimes you have to mess with the Origin directory permissions because it will get locked down for some reason and the Launcher won't open.

I have been playing Dead Space 3 all week without any problems.

I made one mistake...

Windows version has to be Windows XP before you install Origin, otherwise it won't launch at all.

I confirmed it this morning...

I just tried to set up an installation script for Phoenicis (PoL5). Using Windows XP gave me an error message that I need at least Windows 7.

I found recently that the steps need to be in a certain order:

  • Create new virtual drive
  • Select Wine 2.0-staging (or newer)
  • Set Wine Config to Windows XP (Normally default)
  • Install packages (corefonts, d3dx9, vcrun2008, vcrun2010, vcrun2012, vcrun2013, tahoma)
  • Install Legacy Origin (OriginThinSetup.exe)
  • Login to Origin

The Legacy Origin is important because it still supports Windows XP but is missing some features.

The legacy client installs but I cannot run it ("update could not be completed"). This is exactly what is described on https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=26175&iTestingId=97941. So how did you manage to run it without dowloading the update manually as described there (and by @ImperatorS79)?

Did you uncheck all of the options during the installation?

I uncheck everything including the update.  What version of Wine are you using?

Just tried again with everything unchecked. Still the same issue. I'm using Wine 2.10 staging. I opened a pull request for it (Phoenicis PoL5): https://github.com/PlayOnLinux/Scripts/pull/260 Maybe you want to check that out.

I'm using the old stable Wine 2.0-staging... not sure if that would make a difference, but also make sure to create a new virtual drive, 32-bit with the packages I mentioned before.

It won't allow you to switch from Windows 7 to Windows XP, that is what I originally tried and it didn't work for me either.

I just posted a guide yesterday on Kingdoms of Amalur which uses Origin... just do a search with "linux guide" in the search.

Sorry, I cannot find it. Neither in the search nor in your history. Would you mind giving it a try to provide a script for Phoenicis PoL5 (you can checkout my approach in the link above)?

Still the same: "update could not be completed".

That is strange... I have no idea  at this point.  I was able to install Origin 3 times without any problems.  I wonder if the legacy version has been updated to support Windows 7 only?  But then why would they call it a legacy?

No idea. Anyways: with the workaround to download the update manually, it works now (that's also the version we have in the repository for Phoenicis PoL5).

Oh, I didn't realize you were using POL5

I'm still using the old POL 4.2.10 and plan to upgrade to .12
