That sounds like a video card or video driver problem.  What are your specs?
Distro?

Gateway Ne56r laptop linux mint rebecca 17.3 8gb ram 500gb storage space. I have had continuous problems with my fan throughout the years. Could this be the problem?

Is this your laptop?  Acer Gateway on Amazon

If it is, then you have Intel HD video card, but I'm not sure which one?
Intel® HD Graphics with 128MB of dedicated system memory

Mint will automatically install Intel's proprietary video driver, but you can check in the Driver Manager.  Look in Menu/Administration/Driver Manager.  If Intel Proprietary is "checked" then it Mint did install it for you.  If not, then check the "recommended proprietary driver" and click Apply to install it.

Are you able to play any other games in Mint?

I use Mint 17.2 on 3 desktops and 1 touchscreen.  It absolutely ROCKS!  I can play a lot of native games from Steam and GOG.  I can also play a lot of games through PlayOnLinux as well.
