I managed to install Swtor and it worked quite well, it was even faster to load than on Windows. However when I reached big planets like tatooine it began to freeze. When I ventured into the dune sea which is a large open area it started freezing after a couple of steps. Each time it freezes the Hud siappears and the only way to close the game is to kill the process. What is the cause of this issue? Can anything be done?

Bumping this because I am also wanting to see tor run smoother on linux and am having the same intermittent freezing going on.

There seems to be a well known issue about freezings in the game. Since the manufacturer doesn't support linux officially it wasn't possible to fix it. I saw postings concerning it from 2012 on.
The game freezes, when hovering with the mouse over quest-marks on the map (see swtor-forums, winehq; i.e.: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32092)
or if you're afk for some time (my own expirience; usually it should fall back to the choice of chars-screen).
I think, all those freezes are the same issue ... and not to solve without official help, I read somewhere. :(

Which version of Wine are you using?
Have you tried using the Wine staging versions?
Can you post the debug output?

Well, I expirienced the problem. I used the installation option from the games-menu, not manually. And with recognizing the problem I searched around in the net a bit (and found i.e. the mentioned link above) and resigned.
Hm, it uses 1.7.22 - i will change it to the latest and give it a try later today.

Okay, i moved it to wine 1.7.52-staging and got a change in reaction.
i entered the game and opened the map. i hovered with the mouse above a quest-mark - then it doesn't froze, but aborted with a window about an error-message. This info is an unknown village for me and i hope, it is ok, when i just paste it in here:
Unhandled exception: divide by zero in 32-bit code (0x0089f7c5).

I am an old veteran gamer from times of C=64 on - used to ms-dos and basic - but i prefer linux ubuntu trusty tahr and dislike windy win-doh!-s and nasty nsa and webwielding whackers and spying spiders - face me in a dungeon and i'll show you (you mobs)!

Thanks for the debug, but it doesn't show everything. What I see is the errors after the crash.
Try copying the entire debug from the begginning with the date.
You should see a lot of "fixme:" or "err:"
Can you play any other games in PlayOnLinux?

I copied everything from this window. there is nothing above- just tried it again.
There is a winehq-forum entry from may with a lot fixmes in it:
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=27088
Well, I do play. I am new to linux and tested some old games, too. Playing Myst IV, Half Life 2 Episode 1 (oh, no, that is steam, right?) without any problems. Some i have no clue how to get them running like Might & Magic 5 - Mandate of Heaven (version gold games 4? - because they consist of an install+mixed game dvd) or Myst V ... i have drawers full of old games. I have to get deeper in those configurations and so on, i suppose. And as you can see in the manual installations section of the forum i have completely different problems with neverwinter mmo (performance - not just poorly, but underground), but it IS running without a crash so far. P.S.: ty for the neverwinter-installation-walkthrough, booman :D

If you can play Neverwinter in PlayOnLinux then you should be able to play SWOTOR
So it only crashes when you close the game? Can you actually start the game and play a bit?

List of problems:
- crashes when hovering with the mouse above some quest-marks on the map (map-bug)
- crashes when afk (not moving)
- crashes when trying to change (graphical) settings ingame (there pops up a small window, where you should click "keep the changes" or "return to old settings" - but then you can only move the mouse and everything is frozen)
- the others, who wrote before me here, told it froze, when they entered some aeras - or it would freeze anyway sometimes ..., but i havn't tested that so far
- (minor) client-login-window is only a part of that window i should see
With those things aside it seems i could play the game. it is on low settings and absolutely fluent (i couldn't say that of neverwinter :D).
There is no guarantee of course, not to encounter more problems - some more have been mentioned on winehq, i think, but nothing else happend to me so far.

I'm assuming you have the proprietary drivers installed for your video card?
what video card are you using?
what distro are you using?
err:winediag:init_driver_info Could not find GPU info for 8086:0f31.
This error is probably your problem
Not sure what is causing it, specially when games like Neverwinter run fine. Did SWOTOR install in a 32-bit virtual drive?

The laptop has been a present. I got these infos from different sources:
Hardware:
Processor: Intel Celeron N2830 @ 2.42GHz (2 Cores), Motherboard: HP 2213 v57.23, Chipset: Intel ValleyView SSA-CUnit, Memory: 4096MB, Disk: 500GB HGST HTS545050A7, Graphics: Intel ValleyView Gen7 (749MHz)(/Intel HD Graphics Bay Trail?), Audio: Intel ValleyView HD Audio, Network: Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E + Realtek RTL8188EE Wireless
Software:
Linux Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr"; Kernel 3.19.0-30-generic (#34~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 2 22:09:39 UTC 2015); GCC version 4.8 (x86_64-linux-gnu); Desktop Unity 7.2.5; Display Server X Server (Xorg version) 1.17.1; Display Driver intel 2.99.917; OpenGL 3.3 Mesa 10.5.9; Compiler GCC 4.8.4; Gnome 3.8.4
Neverwinter runs much too slow, hard to play it - with windows 10 preview, which was installed before, it ran fluent on this machine.
While it is an LTS the Intel driver for linux is excluded (?). Compare: https://01.org/linuxgraphics/forum/graphics-installer-discussions
I dunno if it is in a 32-bit or 64bit virtual drive - didn't install it manually - used the routine from the games-section of playonlinux - should be 32-bit ?

I just published my log of running neverwinter mmo:
https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-13465.html
It looks completely different! - There is no error about the gpu directly. (?)

As far as I know PlayOnLinux scripts install games into a 32-bit virtual drive, but I don't know how to tell if it is after the game is installed.
Interesting that Neverwinter doesn't produce the same error.
I wonder if the proprietary drivers are installed for your Intel GPU?
I think Ubuntu has something called a Driver Manager (Mint does and its based on Ubuntu)
Check and see if the proprietary drivers are installed for your Intel GPU video card.
If not, then try the Intel Graphics driver for Linux
It might not work because your hardware is too old like Petch mentioned.
If that is the case, then they only choice you would have is an older unsuppored Distro.
I have a Chromebook and run Ubuntu 12.04 on it. The GPU is an Intel HD 2000 and the proprietary driver was automatically installed. So I can play a few games, mostly older ones. I tried upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and the proprietary driver was not installed. Not even supported. So I had to go back to Ubuntu 12.04

the configuration screen revealed, that it is actually a 32-bit installation, as supposed.
i figured out, that my graphics driver should be: Display Driver "intel 2.99.917", which is from x.org and came with umbuntu.
two posts ahead i included a link to 01.org (intel graphics for linux) already - this driver is excluded from usage with lts-versions, like 14.04. trusty tahr, because of the ubuntu-support, if i understood it right along. officially there are no propietary-drivers from intel (for linux), but they are behind 01.org, of course. so in the end i have to rely on ubuntu and what comes from it.
I have a different understanding of petch. he doesn't say, that the hardware would be too old, but the kernel would be too old for this hardware ... (i have no clue of this; can't say, if he is right; ubuntu released an own (generic) update recently ?)
by they way, aside of the different issues for star wars and neverwinter i don't seem to have any problems concerning graphics. even dota 2 and no-more-room-in-hell (both via steam) are running without any problem

I get the freezing during normal play. As well as afk or using the map, moving around and playing the game also freezes. I just got some time off from work and have to take care of a few things today but later tonight I'll log in and try to get a debug of it happening.
I'm a newb and haven't tried staging versions (didn't know what they were) myself though I've tried maybe 7 or so different versions of wine.

These are some of the inherited problems with Linux and hardware. Anything can run out-of-the-box, but gaming requires some hardware accelleration and closed drivers are "usually" the best. Sounds like you are stuck using open source drivers and it can work with some games, then again, maybe you DO have proprietary drivers since DOTA2 and No More Room In Hell running. This is all very confusing.
Again, you could try an older version of Ubuntu, but they are no longer supported.

Actually, I had some issues with the debug and became frustrated. I got playing on the latest staging version and was good for about an hour before it crashed. When I looked at the log it hadn't recorded anything for over 45 minutes.
Could there be something I wasn't seeing?
Also, I wanted to add I am using opensuse 13.2 with the nvidia proprietary driver.
