Hi!

I've succesfully been running steam on Ubuntu and Linux Mint previously, but ever since I installed Debian I've been struggling with getting steam to launch on my debian machine.

System specs:

• OS: Debian 8.0 "Jessie" x86_64.
• POL: 4.2.5
• CPU: i7 2600K
• RAM: 16GB
• GPU: AMD R9-290X with Proprietary drivers

After I've logged in, during the connecting to steam *username*, I get the following error:

Does anyone have a clue about what could cause this problem?

Have about changing the wine version to the latest ??? Maybe that will fix the problem

What is your system wine version ? I am asking this question because you can try installing it on your system wine and see what errors it will show.

My system version is:

Could this cause problems with dependencies? (Altough 1.6.2 is supposed to be the latest stable release for Debian)

Hey, just wanted to say you aren't alone, elitenudel.

• Mint 17.1 x64
• POL 4.2.8 (also was trying on 4.2.4 I believe..)

Mine hangs at "Connecting to <steam account>" or somtimes "Updating Steam Information", it doesn't actually crash until I close it, but I get very similar output in my debugging logs. Lots of the fixme's are different, but I'm getting the exact same 3 errors you are.

Changing to the latest version of Wine, System (1.6.2), or a few other versions hasn't fixed the issue.

I see. I did not have this problem when i was running Linux Mint, altough I think I was running the open source drivers. What kind of driver and GPU are you currently using?

From System Info: Nvidia Corporation GK104 [Geforce GTX 770]

From Driver Manager: nvidia-331: version 331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4

It's interesting to note that in driver manager, there are actually two entries for that driver, both with the same version, but one is titled "nvidia-331-updates". The version listed is identical (331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4), and it recommends the one not labeled "updates".

No the 1.6.2 should not be a factor here but it if you could upgrade to the latest version it would be helpful. Well I am going to try and see if i am getting the same issue or not.
Ok tested it and it works well I guess it will be the best option to upgrade to the latest wine version, and fill up the bug report on winehq

Steam crashes on older versions of Wine, so you should be able to use it through any recent version of wine (installed through Tools -> Manage Wine Versions). I cannot remember which version it stared with, but it was in the 1.7.x series, so just stay with like, 1.7.44 and it should work. 

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I tried wine 1.7.44 and had the same error messages, along with some new ones. They reference NVIDIA RandR, so at the suggestions of some other forum posts I found I tried updating my Nvidia drivers manually. (331 is the latest Mint driver manager supports, I updated to 346.72) After the updates these error messages for 1.7.44 didn't change at all.

The behavior is still the same, Steam will hang at "Connecting Steam account: <username>..." or "Updating Steam Information".

Ubuntu 14 with Mate.

POL 4.2.8 /w Wine 1.7.44 & 1.6

i7, 16gig ram, Nvidia card

Other games on POL work fine. Just Steam games having issues. It worked all day then started showing this error in evening. I have tried completely wiping out all my versions of wine and reinstalling. I have reinstalled on POL and installed straight through command line in a new prefix. Same error appeared in both places. Using Wine 1.7.44 but have also tried 1.6 and 1.7.38.

After installing a whole new OS and getting wine/POL all back up everything was working. Installed Fallout New Vegas. During played ~ 2 hours. The game crash. Then the error is back.

Just deleting the wineprefix doesn't seme to help nor using 1.7.44. Completely deleting POL and installing again will fix it for while but it eventually comes back.
