Hi everyone! I encounter a problem when I launch RTW Gold Edition on my pc. I installed it through steam. I installed steam through playonlinux. So when i start it the screen divides up into squares and its unplayable. Then it crashes and gives an error code. I tried it with many versions of wine still no change ( 1.0; 1.6.2, .1.5.5; 1.7.33) I am using Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca Cinnamon version. Soma, How id you install RTW? I installed Medeval 2 TW Gold yesterday on my Ubuntu 14.04 LTS laptop using the Rome Total War install script as a example. I left all the display options in POL for my prefix on the defaults. The RTW script includes most of the dependencies like installing the directx stuff, but left out .Net So when I run the install the install has issues trying to install .net. But to fix that I simply install mono28 function provided by POL to the script and then do the M2TW install. So far things don't crash on me, but things are very slow. Graphics is excellent in detail, given my laptop uses the radeon HD 45* graphics card where the propriatary driver does not even compile and install and is unsupported by AMD. So I have to put up with the opensource Mesa drivers.
For all 3D/2D games, you need to make sure your graphics driver in linux is working properly by using glxinfo and looking at the rendering string. If that string has anything in it about rasterising or llvmpipe, then you don't have any 3D/2D accelleration from the graphics card, and things will either crash or be very slow. If you do need to fix the graphics/drivers up, it is best to completely remove POL and wine and clean up things and then re-install wine and then POL. I had to do this to get things to work as it seems wine keeps some things somewhere about your old driver and does not clear out things properly. Also try install directx10 from POL function into your prefix to see if that helps, if that fails, install the directxdiag and then run directxdiag to check if your graphics in wine is working as expected.
All I can see from the above error is that wine is having a cow with 3d functions, which might be the directx 3 stuff. I have Rome TW gold also, and might give it a go to see if I have similar issue.
