Skyrim - Failure to Launch

I recently tried to install SKES into Skyrim and it somehow 'broke' the virtual drive, nothing would run and wine kept crashing. I completely deleted the entire virtual drive, restarted my computer, reinstalled Skyrim, and restarted a second time. Not only did i notice the created shortcut was different (now called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim rather than Skyrim) but during the installation process several more programs were downloaded and installed and the entire process took far longer than normal.

However, now that i have it completely installed it will not run. I double click the icon, nothing happens, and when i double click on it a second time, i get a steam error message informing me that the program is already running. After some time the program evidently closes because the 'steam updates' tab that usually opens upon leaving the game pops up with its normal adds for upcoming games or games on sale. I can close this tab and it takes two more double clicks on the desktop shortcut for the process to begin again.

I am running Linux Ultimate 4.2, PlayOnLinux version 4.2.2

My Debugging menu shows the following:

My other PlayOnLinux game, World of Tanks, runs flawlessly and no change in performance has been noted. I also have run Skyrim on my computer before (this morning actually) with not issues or problems (besides the already known sticking movement keys bug).

I can provide any other information if needed.

Also, if you can walk me through how to install SKES with into Skyrim and PlayOnLinux once i get it running i'd be grateful.

Hmm. First, do this:

Upgrade to POL 4.2.5 (check our Download section).

After that, try to run it in Debug mode and see if that shows anything new in the debug log. To start debug mode, in the main PlayOnLinux window, highlight the shortcut for Skryim, and in the left panel, click Debug. Then try to use the game like normal until it crashes, and then post that log here, and let's see if it shows anything different.

I to am also having problems with Steam and Skyrim. My guess is it's a new Steam update rather than SKSE, since SKSE was working fine yesterday and when I tried it today Steam updated first. I'm having the same problems as the OP.

Here are my computer specs:

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 Bit

RAM: 11.7 GB

CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz × 8

Graphics: GeForce GT 640/PCIe/SSE2

POL Verson: 4.2.5

Wine Version Used: 1.5.25

If any additional hardware/debugging information is needed, please let me know. I'll help however I can to fix this.

Here's the debugging info:

So, Steam itself, no matter what, is not working? Let me test on my machine.

Steam broke on Wine not too long ago, and there are a bunch of Steam versions below 1.7.something that don't work with Steam anymore. That might be the problem; the script not being updated with a newer version of Wine that works with newer versions of Steam.

I am almost positive that Steam does not run on 1.5.x at all. 1.7.11 Steam works, but I don't have Skyrim to test.

Try this:

Install the newest version of Wine

Tools -> Manage Wine Versions -> 32-bit -> 1.7.36

Change Skyrim's virtual drive to use that new version of Wine

Configure -> select Skryim virtual drive -> General tab -> Wine version -> select newest Wine version

and try to launch Skyrim via Steam again. If Steam is causing an issue, using a newer version of Wine should fix it without breaking the Skyrim install.

I was also having issues with Skyrim failing to launch. Can confirm switching to Wine 1.7.36 as recommended above fixed my issue.

I am able to run and play Skyrim smoothly now, i had half hoped you'd fixed the sticky movement glitch but one miracle at a time i suppose :P. Now, the last time i tried to install SKSE, i ran the skse_install.exe in the virtual drive, and created a shortcut for the skse_launch file to my desktop (which i read online is how i would have to launch it from now on). But the shortcut was utterly unresponsive and when i would try to use my origional Skyrim shortcut to run the program wine would crash, granted this could be an issue of the wine version i was using but can anyone provide tips or ideas of what i may have done wrong?

Nevermind, Skyrim launches with SKSE just fine now, thanks for the help!

Ok. I am updating the script to use the newer version of Wine, too. That way when you install it again you do not have to manually change the Wine version.
