I was wondering if anyone is experiencing the same issue I have been running Diablo 3 through PlayOnLinux under Ubuntu. Basically everything is flawless except my framerate is about 50% less than it was under Windows 7. Under Windows 7 I was anywhere between 200-400 FPS max settings and when intense fights were happening I would drop to around 45-60 FPS. Under Ubuntu through PlayOnLinux I am getting 60-120 FPS and during intense fights dropping anywhere between 20-30 FPS. I love Ubuntu and I am sticking with it regardless, but was wondering if anyone had some insight. Here are my PC's specs:

i7 2700k@4.5Ghz

GTX 680 Superclocked signature edition  2GB

16GB RAM

120 GB SSD/250GB HDD

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

I have done some research and so far the best performance I have obtained is running it with PlayOnLinux, it's still playable but I would like to get the maximum performance if possible

Thanks

This isn't Windows, so don't expect full performance through Wine. That being said, you should still be getting better performance with those specs, unless this game really just runs like garbage through Wine. Check appdb.winehq.org for Diablo 3 and see what it says about low performance.

Thanks for the reply, I understand it is not Windows, Just asking if anyone has experienced the same as myself because I have seen people with similar or less specs than my machine and still achieve 200+ FPS, As far as I can tell everything is perfect but the fps shows lower than expected. However like I said its playable so I guess for now I will just mess around with it and see if I find anything.

Thanks again for the reply

Do you have the proprietary Nvidia drivers installed? If not, it is probably running on the Nouveau drivers, which are not really up-to-par, performance wise. Make sure that when you install the drivers, you also install the 32-bit graphics libs with it. POL/Wine will want those. That should help if you don't already have them installed. Other than that, it should really give you decent performance. Some games really just run like garbage through Wine, but I have to imagine this is a driver issue or something.

Greetings,

Here are the 3 changes that seemed to improve my performance from 30 fps to 100fps on my ubuntu 14.04, with NVidia GTX960

  • HardwareClass "1"  (70fps-100fps)
Highlight "Diablo III"

Highligh "Diablor III"
Go to Configure, Miscellaneous, "Open a Shell"
Navigate to...
Wine -> Browse C: drive -> users -> (click on your user, not on "Public") -> My Documents -> Diablo III ->
Open "D3Prefs.txt" (nano "D3Prefs.txt")
Change the following...
DisableTrilinearFiltering "0" -> set it to -> DisableTrilinearFiltering "1"

  • wine-staging (40fps-70fps)
On POL menu, choose "Tools", Manager Wine Versions
Under Available Wine Versions pick the latest version with -staging at the end (1.7.51-staging)
click the > to install
Go to Configure
Select that version under "Wine Version"
Right click on Diablo II for "Configure Wine"
Click on Staging Tab
Check "Enable_CSMT for better graphic performance", then OK

  • CPUFREQ (30fps-40fps)
Install "indicator-cpufreq " and set it to "Performance"
sudo apt-get install indicator-cpufreq

Good Luck
