Hi guys

After some strugle i got this game running on openSUSE 13.1 ( Linux)

It complained it could not find the dvd ( or cd)

I then went into the wine configuration and browsed to the dvd.

Game started, but he next time I wanted to play I had to redo this all over.

The drive was still listed in the wine config, but only deleting it, and doing it over got the game running.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there something else ?

The wried thing for me, after I had typed in the cd key, stalker instanly complained about nog being able to find the drive, when I wanted to start the game, which I solved like stated above.

Delete the virtual drive that it created in PlayOnLinux, then copy the disc to a folder in your home folder, and when the installer asks where it is at, point to that folder. This happens from time-to-time, where Wine does not want to see the disc drive. It is not a normal thing, but it is known to happen. That fix is what most suggest when it complains about not finding the drive. Give that a shot.

Thank you, do I need to make an iso file for this or can I just copy paste the dvd to my home folder ?

Remove virtual drive, Select all, then copy and paste, then and re-istall ?

Yes. Make a new directory in your home folder and copy the disc to it, and then just point POL to that folder when it asks. That usually works.

Too bad it did not work.

Same problem as before, it does install , but right after I have put in the cd key, it start the nag about it not being able to find the drive.

And then play onlinux hangs. And because this way the instalation wont finish, I cant get to the wine settings either..

I had already checked the wine database. There it is stated you need a no cd hack for non us versions of this game. And since I am in europe.

Unless some one here knows a better way ?

That might be the problem, but we cannot help with cracks in any way, shape, or form. I am not sure what else to try. You could try to make an ISO and mount it, but depending on the license for the game, that might not be legal either.

Yeah it too bad, but I understand that. They would sew wine and or playonlinux instantly.

I will not give up, and will do some more searching online.

Thanks anyway, might give the iso way a try. Atleast the game is working, after I mess with the wine settings. So thats a start, and lets hope I find a solution for not having to go into the wine settings everytime.

make sure your PlayOnLinux is the newest version:  4.2.5

Copy the game (as Ronin suggested) to a folder and install from that folder
Make sure the DVD is in the drive, then go to Wine Configuration
Click the Drives Tab and make sure the "D" drive is pointed to your DVD ROM

Then it should be able to see the DVD when playing.
If not, try pointing the "D" drive to the folder you copied the game into

I made an iso from the dvd. After some searching I found how to mount the iso on openSUSE.

That does not work either though. Still the game complains it cant find the dvd.

A nice exapmple, how a copy protection is giving a legit user a hard time.

It seems I have two options. Set the path every time in wine after a reboot, or try the update I just found.

For obvious reasons, I can't post a link to this update.

It is an true update, not the complete game, but it also has the solution offered by wineHQ.

Fingers crossed.

Oh, I didn't realize it was copy protection.  What version of Wine are you using?

I have experienced several games that refuse to run because of copy protection breaking Wine.  It really sucks because I'm sure it works fine in Win.

Well the problem was, I had to add the link to the dvd everytime I started my pc.

Although wine remembered the right link, it did not work anymore after a reboot.

Because I also asked for help on an openSUSE forum, I think I found the problem, but no solution.

The problem is prob that openSUSE (linux) makes a temp mount point, when the dvd is in the drive.

But that mount point does not survive a restart.

I also had to open the file browser (dophin on openSUSE) and browse to the dvd, to be able to add the path in wine.

Thats why I tried the iso way, I was able to mount the iso permantly, but that did not work either.

Because the copy protection does not fall for the iso trick, or wine cant handle it.

For others the 100% legal part, download the updates ( exe files ) from the official site.

Then in play on linux look for the option, run an exe file in this virtual drive.

Although play onlinux claimed the game had crashed, the update worked fine.

That was also what the message from playonlinux told me, stalker might have crashed but if the program starts, you can ignore this message.

I then tried to start the game, and I can confirm the updating worked.

Then I aplied the no cd hack, but I am not gonna explain that part.

There might be a way to make the mount point permantly, but the sugestions I got from the openSUSE forum all ended in the game still asking for the dvd. ( although the dvd was in the drive)

To sum it up, stalker will work, with some extra effort, but wine hq is prob right about the no cd patch needed for no usa version.

My problem is solved though, game is working fine now, and I dont have to add the drive anymore every time I start my pc.

I'm glad its working, but sucks you had to use a no-cd crack.  If you want to keep troubleshooting it, I will help you.

I wonder if the mounting optical media in SuSE is the problem.

We could add an entry for your DVD drive in fstab (file system table)  I have messed with those before in the past.  This way every time you boot, the DVD drive is mounted as the exact same drive name and location.

In Mint the DVD is always under /media/

Wel lf I can help play onlinux (others), I am willing to give it another try.

I am 99% sure the problem is in the mounting in openSUSE.

I installed the game through play onlinux with out any problems.

The problems started when I clicked from the installer, launch the game. It instantly started to complain it could not find the dvd. ( which I could solve temporary, by going into wine config and browse to the dvd. The one weird thing for me, if I dont use the file browser to go to the dvd, that trick wont work, but as far as I understand things, that also points to an mounting issue.

Thats also why I suspect the copy protection is causing this. From what I found on the net its securom protection.

http://www.tweakguides.com/STALKER_4.html

One question though, can I use play on linux to install staker twice ?

Because I do ofcourse not like, killing the one I got working.

Hard disk space is not an issue, plenty of that.

And about fstab, that solution was used by an ubuntu user for stalker, but I cant find that topic anymore.

I do know that openSUSE is one of the more paranoid distro's. security over user friendly.

We won't help you get around any copy protection at all. If copying it to the hard drive does not work, then we can't do anything to help you get passed that.

It is not your distro that is causing the mounting issues; it is Wine. Fairly prominent issue, too. Basically, if Wine cannot find the disc when trying to run the game, it is likely copy protection stoppig you from doing that, and it will need to be cracked, which is something that we cannot become invovled in at all. Sorry.

Yes, You can install it again in another virtual drive, but you can't use the script to install the game.

The best way to test our theory's is to do a manual installation, but it requires a few more steps.

This is how I installed it, but that was a year-n-a-half ago:  STALKER:  SOC

I never had a problem with the DVD ROM, but notice at the bottom someone else posted they did have the same problem.

@booman - that is sweet if you can get around it without cracking it. That is excellent. I was worried that we might be getting into "hacks" and whatnot. lol. What is odd, is sometimes I have an issue with CDs/DVDs, and sometimes I don't. Normally the copying-to-the-drive method gets it working, but yeah. I never could figure out why it is grumpy sometimes, and others it isn't.

I wonder if ripping it to an ISO and mounting it would work better (although, depending on the game's license, that may or may not be ok)? Hopefully your guide gets him up and running. The script may need to be updated in some way, too.

Its a really old guide and uses an old version of PlayOnLinux.  I have a feeling its out-of-date and doesn't apply.

If he installs via script again, it will just over-write the first installation because it will have the same virtual drive name correct?
