[issue]Installing current steam on older wine version

Preferably wine32 ver. 1.5.28

I try to install Steam client on wine ver. 1.5.28 because wineHQ says "Medieval Total War 2" has the gold status on this build. The more recent versions, especially 1.7.x, have the Garbage status. I need the steam client because I have the steam version of the game.

The steam installation process stops when normally the login window appears (the installation hangs and the window never appears). Is there any way to install Steam on this build of Wine?

I've encountered a post on the steam forum that says the Steam client won't start in the online mode on older Wine versions. If it is true, the solution would be installing Wine and then running it offline but:

1. I don't know how to do it.

2. This case may be even more difficult then a "regular" offline run because I would have to to run offline at the first start of the Steam client without registering my account. Is it possible at all?

Or maybe there are other ways to run Steam on older Wine versions.

Thanks for your response. So the steam cannot run neither in online nor offilne mode on wines earlier than 1.7.8. I saved a lot of time thanks to you.

You're welcome.

Actually I think there have been some other incompatibilities since then (with the game overlay maybe?), so 1.7.8 just sets some lower bound :(

Steam users may have a more accurate idea of what versions work those days...

Some experienced used (~6k posts) of WineHQ forum told me the stock wine version 1.6.2 (current stable) is patched so that the steam can be installed on it. Yet the installation on the playonlinux ver of 1.6.2 stops in the same way as 1.5.28...

That's probably true, Wine 1.6.2 has been released between Wine 1.7.10 and 1.7.11

It would be great if playonlinux community rebuilt their wine 1.6.2. Should I report a bug or write a post in a different section?

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean; If 1.6.2 contains the fixes for Steam compatibility, current build already has it.

I posted previous message two times by mistake so I didn't see your respond.

I cannot install steam on 1.6.2 on my machine therefore I tought that the playonlinux version was not patched. This is probably some local problem on my computer, but can anyone confirm on this forum that playonlinux wine 1.6.2 allows installing steam ?

Wine works on my computer. No confirmation needed :-). I will check the game too.

We build Wine from source, so if it is in the original (or "vanilla") Wine from WineHQ, it is in ours, unless it is patched with something else.

From us:

1.6.2 = a regular, vanilla build, with no added patches. What is on WineHQ is what we have available.

1.6.2-anything = vanilla 1.6.2, patched with whatever patch is in the name, but still has all 1.6.2 patches.
