i have been testing Sacred 2 in PlayOnLinux for over week now and it runs beautifully. The only problems I am having is random crashing. Supposedly this is common for Windows as well.
POL: 4.2.5
Wine: 1.6.2
GeForce 550 Ti
Nvidia 331
This is the GOG version of Sacred 2 Gold
I have Wine 1.7.31 and the Sacred 2 Cleanup Utility, but no luck with the crashing.
Also, I have tried the Community patch and still get the random crash.
The only thing consistant about the crash is it happens every 15 minutes or so.
I can F7 to save my progress, load up Sacred 2 again and continue...

After using newer versions of Wine like 1.7.32 I am able to play for an hour without crashing.
It seems when an hour passes it crashes consistently each time. Probably a memory leak, but I keep hitting F7 to save my character and just re-load after the crash.

Hello, I tried to install Sacred 2 Gold GoG from disk and the installation always hangs up at around 75% of the progress bar. I tried your step-by-step guide and the same happens. Did you encounter this ? I tried on Win 7, Win XP, 32bit, 64bit, several different Wine versions but everytime it hangs up at 75%. I even left it over the night but the progress bar won't move, and there is no disk activity. Any ideas ? P.S.: I am installing on a 64bit Debian Sid system, dual video card: GTX660m and integrated Intel video on i7 quad-core CPU. I can play games with any of the 2 cards, the GTX with primusrun (bumblebee).

I have the same problem and I habe add gdiplus in the libary. In the step-by-step guide it will be install, too.
-> http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/sacred-2-gold-guide.945/
I do not know what I have to do. The integrity check from gog installer says nothing, so the images are ok. Have anybody an idea?

Yeah, add gdiplus package during the PlayOnLinux Package installation part.
That fixes the hang-up for every GOG game installation. I just recently realized it and updated every single Guide.

I have used gdiplus on a few GOG games here and there, but others didn't need it at all.
Now I always install it to be safe, because some games never finish the installation or error if you don't.

At the time (Wine 1.5.9 maybe?) the other problem with not having native gdiplus were black rectangles in the installer, so I added it unconditionally.

I played sacred 2 on windows, but never had a problem there.
if it would help, i could install it - but my edition comes from a computer magazin (computer bild spiele), which has been published in germany in 2012 - perhaps there would be completely different issues ? (it is no gold edition - i could swear, i had that one somewhere, too, but dunno)
EDIT: I have to draw back - my second dvd for installation won't be recognised by the system - possibly it is broken.

Yes, this is very common with multiple discs. Try copying all the data from both DVD's to a folder on the desktop. Then install Sacred 2 from there.

Nope, it is no installation issue - the systems don't recognizes the dvd, declaring, that the drive would be empty.

Oh, I've seen that as well. I had this problem in Mint where if you had a DVD in the drive and don't properly unmount it, then when you put the next DVD in, Mint won't recognize it.
Try this:
- Right-click DVD
- Click Eject
Then insert the DVD again.
Now does it recognize the DVD and can you browse the files?
If not, try Ejecting again.

the system never recognizes this dvd. - what is strange about it:
it is not that long ago that i installed the game on a windows-desktop ...

Ok, very strange...
It obviously works in Windows, but not sure why Linux won't read it.
You don't happen to have another DVD drive laying around?
You could always copy the files to a folder on your desktop in Windows, then copy them to a flash drive and install it in Linux, but I know that defeats the point of installing it in Linux.
You could always buy the GOG version
Wait for a sale and you can pick it up cheap

I tested now again. The Installation freeze at around 75%. Always at the same picture (Alan Wake). And I have use gdiplus and all your other settings. I use the newest gog-version. Perhaps there is a problem with the nvidia physx installation? This windows does not come during installation. I don' know what tot do..... I also have downloaded the game several times. Can anybody help me?

What version of Wine are you using?
Did you install Physx ahead of time with PlayOnLinux packages?
I've had games freeze and eventually pop-up with some errors, did this happen to you as well?
Try waiting it out.... after about 30 minutes you should eventually get an error
One solution is to install with a command: /nogui
But you will have to create the virtual drive first, install the packages and then copy the Sacred2 installer to the virtual drive, create a shortcut and then run it with the command.
Kind of a pain

I also tried several ways of finding a solution (for the GoG version) but still hangs up at 75%, even with gdiplus.
I tried the method with /nogui as booman suggested (which I also found here : http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/the-witcher-2-guide.612/ ) but the installer skips the .bin files and several window errors with proc appear, therefore no clean installation possible.
If anyone finds a solution, please post it also here.
Many thanks to the people involved!

UPDATE: IT WORKS !!!!!!!!!!
This is what I did and I do not dare to reproduce it in fear of not working anymore :D :
1) Installed the /nogui way (I do not know for sure if this step is necesarry before step 2) or after it, I did both), i.e. install as booman suggested (and all the packages that he pointed in his first post) and when it asks to browse for the installer, click Cancel. Then go to the PlayOnLinux main menu > Configure, click on your sacred2 drive, then click Miscellaneous, then Open program's directory. In drive_c make a new directory, e.g. Sacred2_install, copy your Sacred2 install kit there. Go back to the PLayOnLinux configurator for your sacred2 drive, go to General tab and click Make a new shortcut from this virtual drive. It should show you a link with the installer. Click it and Next. Then back at the PLayOnLinux configurator for your sacred2 drive, click the new icon below it, with the installer icon. Now on the right side at the General tab, in the Arguments field put /nogui, then close. Now in your PlayOnLinux shortcuts you will have the installer shortcut and now you click Run on it. It will try to install Sacred2 with its original windows, not the GoG ones, but it fails (this is how it did to me) wih several error windows but keep clicking OK and NEXT even if it ends the installing in 5 seconds.
2) Now go back to the PoL configurator at the installer icon and remove /nogui from the Arguments field (the one you put earlier). Now it will try to install the PoL way, and it hangs at 75%. At this point, open System Monitor (where you see your running processes) and end the process for the installer ending with _g (there are 2 of them, so be careful). At this point, PoL thinks it finished installing and asks for you to choose a shortcut. Choose the sacred2.exe .
3) For some reason, I repeated step 1), i.e. put back again /nogui in the Arguments field for the installer and it failed as before. BUT now when you click on the sacred2.exe shortcut that it made at step 2), the game runs. Voila !
Let me know if you find difficulties in following these steps. I do not know if it was just me being lucky or somehow it has to be done like this.
Cheers !
