Linux Mint 17 with Mate, GeForce 9500 GT
Steam itself works fine and I have a 32-bit prefix for it in PoL. I can play Magic 2014 and Mount & Blade just fine.
When I try to run Blood Bowl: Chaos Edition from Steam, I get a splash screen, then that goes away and I hear music / crowd noises but see nothing.
Things I have tried to no effect:
- Install ia32-libs, restart Steam
- Set Fullscreen to 1 and Shaders to 0 in Data/Options.xml

Since you can play Mount-n-Blade and Magic 2014 I can tell you have the proprietary drivers installed for your GeForce 9500 GT. Its an older card, but there is a chance those unsupported drivers can't handle Blood Bowl. Not that its a new game or anything... I'm sure a laptop can handle it
Did you turn off the Steam In-Game Community Overlay? This can cause games to crash.
I noticed a post on WineHQs about Securom DRM. Did you see it trying to install or confirm?
Which components/packages did you install from PlayOnLinux? d3dx9, dotnet, vcrun, etc?
You may want to try a manual installation, I found that I have more success installing games this way and it helps me learn how PlayOnLinux works.
Feel free to post the debug as well.

In order to get a clean answer for you, I made a fresh prefix. While writing this post I actually got into the main menu, but then I fiddled with the configs and couldn't get back there, so I'm reinstalling again. Will let you know how it goes.
BTW, I've since upgraded my graphics card to a second-hand GeForce GTX 260.
While installing Steam, it stalled at 95,548 KB. When I clicked "Cancel", it crashed. Crash log is below.
Unhandled exception: page fault on write access to 0x00000039 in 32-bit code (0x7bc50043).

It will be better to get Steam installed first, then give us the debug after launching BloodBowl.
Here is a step-by-step guide on manually installing Steam: Steam Guide
This will help you setup things properly in PlayOnLinux. Note, you probably won't need all of those libraries for Blood Bowl.
Also, did you install the Nvidia drivers for that GTX 260?

Doh, I forgot to mention it but I did get Steam installed. All it needed was running again and it finished installing.
The GTX 260 uses the same drivers as the 9500 GT, so no change was required.
Also after deleting and reinstalling again I realised where the configs are kept: in your home directory, under a directory called "BloodBowlChaos". Sigh.

Ok, great, so go ahead and download/install Blood Bowl, then launch it with Debug and lets see what errors there are when it crashes.
Don't forget to disable that overlay

What? Really?
That has happened to me before as well. Sometimes just changing Wine versions fixes it. Or if Securom is causing problems, it could have finally decided to allow you to play.
Cool, mark this post as "solved" (even though we don't know how it was solved )

FWIW I don't think SecuROM has anything to do with it since it's the Steam version and the store page says nothing about third party DRM. Anyway, I'm marking it solved.

Good to hear. I have read about games that have an additional DRM even if they are a Steam game. Like Bioshock 2. Can't play it because Securom doesn't work.
Also games like Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations have to install Uplay client even though you purchased them in Steam and downloaded them in Steam.
Its pretty dumb.

Can I sort of pirate this thread and go back to the original problem, as I have the same thing happening?
Steam works fine (as far as I can tell), I installed BB through Steam, but upon starting it I only hear music, there's no game window anywhere. I'm on Gnome3, if that makes a difference.
I found reference to a bug on the winehq where apparently someone works around this by setting wine to Windows 7 instead XP, but that doesn't help me much, as then I get various error messages when starting steam and while I get a BB window, it's just black and does nothing as far as I can see.
Sorry if this is somewhat vague, I'm currently at work, but any help would be much appreciated.

How did you install Blood Bowl... Script or Manual?
What distro are you running? 64-bit?
Video card?

I installed PoL from the Ubuntu 14.04 64Bit repos, then Steam via the script in PoL and BB right from inside Steam.
My graphics card is a GeForce GTX 750 Ti with 2GB memory. I've tried running steam with wine 1.9.3-staging, 1.8-steam_crossoverhack, 1.8-staging and 1.7.53-steam_crossoverhack, each as Win7 or WinXP, setting wine do emulate a full-screen size desktop or running full-screen.
If I use Win7 in any combination I get popup windows informing me of problems with steamwebhelper.exe and the details look like this:
http://pastebin.com/Ts8khjvD
Despite what it says here:
https://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-13306.html
I get that even when using 1.7.53-steam_crossoverhack
I just tried installing Steam manually through PoL into a 64bit prefix, same error about steamhelper

Ok, looks like you have messed with this stuff before.
The Steamwebhelper.exe error isn't serious, it just means you can't browse the store with Steam in Wine.
Do you have the Nvidia drivers installed for your GTX 750 Ti?
Did you install the 32-bit libraries for your Ubuntu 64-bit?

I have indeed been around the blocks a few times over the years, yeah. ;)
I'm using the 352.63 driver installed through the repos. I honestly don't think I've installed any 32bit binaries, unless PoL pulled them in.
I actually had half a success earlier. I installed IE8 in the 32-bit Steam installation, the error is gone but I can't see the store (no biggie, really). Still couldn't play BB. But after setting wine to Windows Vista, I could actually play! Ha! Unfortunately the game crashed dead at the end-of-game whistle of my first game, so I'm still not quite happy ;)

Those 32-bit libraries are pretty important with programs and games that are only 32-bit compatible. Search for multi-arch for Ubuntu 14.04
There are some Terminal commands to execute in order to install them.
Are you able to play any other games in Linux?

I play Pillars of Eternity and Tales of MajEyal a lot both without problems. I occasionally play Civ V as well, all smooth.
Just checked, turns out I have multiarch-support installed already. :D

Strange, then I'm not sure why Blood Bowl is causing problems? You have everything setup perfectly and confirmed that games are working. There is a chance that multi-arch is missing some specific libraries....
Here is the command you can run to install all the typical 32-bit libraries:
sudo apt-get install libasound2:i386 libasound2-plugins:i386 libfontconfig1:i386 lib32nss-mdns libgnutls26:i386 libxslt1.1:i386 libxcursor1:i386 libxcomposite1:i386 libosmesa6:i386 libopenal1:i386 libmpg123-0:i386 libldap-2.4-2:i386 liblcms2-2:i386 libgstreamer0.10-0:i386 libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0:i386 libgsm1:i386 libxinerama1:i386 libxi6:i386 libv4l-0:i386 libsane:i386 libudev1:i386 libxml2:i386 libcups2:i386 libxrandr2:i386 libice6:i386 libsm6:i386

There were actually a few packages in there that the meta "multiarch-support" didn't pull in. I just played an Exhibition Game all the way through (ok, I intentionally ended my turns 16 times) and it didn't crash. here's to hoping this will do.
Thank you!

I still can't believe Ubuntu doesn't have a package anymore that supports all of those libraries. Its so frustrating because they are necessary for most game. Native or non-native.
Glad its working. Don't forget to mark this thread as "solved"
